JOB REFERENCE: PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to express my strong interest in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) position currently available at Riverstone Wellness Center. As a soon-to-be graduate of Walden University’s Master of Science in Nursing program specializing in psychiatric mental health, I am confident I can contribute compassionate, evidence-based care to your dynamic clinical team.
Throughout my graduate clinical training, I have worked with diverse populations in outpatient, inpatient, and community-based mental health settings. I have had extensive experience evaluating and treating individuals in complex conditions, such as bipolar behavior, schizophrenia, traumatizing conditions, and co-occurring substance use. The rotations supported my desire to practice person-centered care and enhanced my expertise in psychiatric assessment, medication therapy, and therapeutic communication. I am particularly attracted to Riverstone and its holistic approach to behavioral health, consistent with my beliefs of being culturally responsive and holistic.
In addition to strong clinical reasoning, I bring the ability to build therapeutic rapport quickly, navigate interdisciplinary collaboration effectively, and adapt interventions to meet each client’s individualized needs. I seek further education in dialectical behavior therapy and will extend my clinical specialty to include youth and young adults. My vision is to assist in addressing mental health access disparities by community-unused groups with innovative and trauma-informed practices.
I would be glad to discuss further the extent to which my professional and personal background and objectives fit into Riverstone’s mission. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the possibility of contributing to your team.
Sincerely,
Nelsa Masog

Portfolio
Personal Philosophy Statement
As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I suppose that mental health should be regarded as closely related to physical, emotional, and social health. My professional philosophy is based on humanistic care, where individuals are treated as a whole instead of a compilation of symptoms. I should do my best to make my clients feel cared for, dignified, and culturally sensitive, and strive to provide advanced practice nursing at the highest level of ethical and clinical standards.
I intend to develop therapeutic interventions focusing on trust, safety, and openness. I believe that the healing process starts when people are heard, validated, and respected. Beyond the prescription of drugs, my duties as a PMHNP involve listening attentively, respecting the lived experience, and taking patients through the collaborative treatment planning process, which considers patients’ autonomy. I will contribute to the provision of evidence-based treatment for depression, psychosis, or substance use disorders and can achieve this goal by drawing on compassion-informed interventions.
I am also dedicated to culturally competent care, where treatment takes into consideration race, gender, and socioeconomic background on psychological health status. The importance of providing everyone with equal access to person-centered psychiatric care is a human right that informs my philosophy. As a provider, I will be both a clinician and advocate—I will strive to generate positive change through education and outreach and operate through trauma-informed practice, helping to alleviate disparities and encourage resilience.
Personal Goals
Short-Term Goals
Upon completing my MSN-PMHNP program and passing the ANCC certification exam, my short-term goal is to obtain licensure and work in a community outpatient behavioral health center. I am enthusiastic about working with vulnerable groups of people, especially underserved youth, veterans, and patients struggling with substance use disorders and mental health issues. The areas of clinical skills that I intend to develop in my first year of practice include psychiatric assessment, treatment planning, and psychopharmacologic management.
I will undergo continuing education to set a wider perimeter, mainly to examine trauma-informed care, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and crisis stabilization. I will also be an active member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association to keep up with clinical guidelines, policy changes, and any growth opportunities in the profession. These steps will help ensure I remain accountable to evolving standards in mental health care.
Long-Term Goals
Looking ahead, my long-term goal is to open a nurse-led mental health clinic that offers sliding-scale services, group therapy, and peer support programs for socially marginalized individuals with chronic psychiatric conditions. I also intend to get a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree emphasizing systems leadership and behavioral health policy advocacy.
I also seek to become a preceptor and mentor to future PMHNP students to influence the next generation of ethical, evidence-based professionals. I aim to participate in community-based research by improving outcomes in the historically under-resourced population. The ultimate vision is to become a mental health system redesigner leader who will enhance the role of inclusivity, access, and patient empowerment.
Self-Assessment
My nursing career began with a deep commitment to addressing health inequities and a passion for integrating mental and physical health care. Over the years, I have gained experience across med-surg units, outpatient mental health clinics, and public health roles, each of which strengthened my understanding of the social determinants that impact mental health outcomes. These experiences prepared me to assess the full context of a patient’s life when making clinical decisions.
The PMHNP program at Walden University has significantly advanced my knowledge of psychiatric theory, diagnostic reasoning, and psychopharmacology. Through clinical placements, I have performed comprehensive mental status exams, risk assessments, and managed patients with complex disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and PTSD. I have also engaged in brief therapeutic modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. These experiences taught me to approach each patient with presence, patience, and a deep respect for their resilience.
My ability to establish rapport across cultural and socioeconomic lines is one of my strongest features. I am also a compassionate communicator who can listen attentively and validate patients’ experiences, a practice that will prompt therapeutic engagement and follow-through. I am also equipped with excellent organization and critical thinking abilities, which help make the right diagnosis and safe prescribing. Nevertheless, there are still areas of growth for me, like pediatric psychopharmacology, electronic health documentation, and billing practices, and I am currently seeking additional training on these areas.
The compilation of this portfolio has also enabled me to compare my clinical preparedness, recognize the need to improve, and align my behaviors with my long-term career goals. According to Najaffard et al. (2024), portfolios are dynamic tools that demonstrate a clinician’s changing competencies and ethical grounding. My present portfolio comprises licensure forms, CEUs, reflective stories, and supervisor checks, and all of these pieces help me on my path of growth.
In addition to credentials, a professional portfolio would further improve exposure and make one personally responsible. As Alsiö et al. (2022) stressed, it helps to track the goals and establish a culture of lifelong learning due to the strategic reflection. This process has motivated me to ensure that I am more of an advocate and a leader. Portfolios can act as a hub of quality improvement initiatives, patient impact stories, and quantifiable results that become a source of professional identity, as Endalamaw et al. (2024) propose.
My portfolio will not be a fixed piece of paper; it is a dynamic record of my identity as a PMHNP. It helps me consolidate my principles and clinical focus, guiding me toward valuable contributions to the future of mental health care.
