The Hiring Manager
Harmony Behavioral Health Group

San Antonio, TX 78230
Dear Hiring Manager,
RE: Application for Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Position
I am writing to apply for the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) position newly advertised at Harmony Behavioral Health Group. I am a Walden University MSN-PMHNP graduate and registered nurse with over ten years of multidisciplinary clinical practice and I am eager to be of assistance to your organization as it strives to provide patient-focused, compassionate mental health care.
During my PMHNP clinical education, I saw patients with complex psychiatric presentations including mood disorders, substance use, and trauma-related disorders. These experiences further solidified me in practicing care that is holistic and includes medication management, brief psychotherapy, and evidence-based practice. I am drawn most to Harmony’s emphasis on community-based, culturally competent practice, which aligns with my personal and professional philosophy.
My strengths are related to the ability to build therapeutic relationships, complete thorough psychiatric assessments, and work in an interprofessional setting. I am planning to establish a non-judging trauma-informed healing and empowerment space. I am also considering acquiring more training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) to improve clinical practice.
I am confident that my robust clinical experience, enthusiasm for mental health equality and dedication to ongoing learning deserve my place on your team. I am excited about the opportunity to let you know how I can help in your organization’s future successes.
Sincerely,
Emelda Okun

PORTFOLIO
PERSONAL PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT
As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I believe it is never my right to separate mental health from physical, emotion, and social health. As a clinician, my philosophy is to stick to the standard of humanistic approach of care in which a patient is not a diagnosis but a person. My slogan, which relates to me personally, is that I should treat each person with empathy, dignity, and respect, and also observe the ethical and clinical standards of advanced practice nursing.
In my opinion, anyone can be healed as soon as the patient is heard, appreciated, and supported. In my work, I attempt to create a nonjudgmental environment that will enable trust and openness. As a PMHNP, my task is to listen, validate lived experiences, and work with the patients in collaborative creation focused on the respect of patient autonomy. Whether treating depression, psychosis, substance use, or trauma, I aim to balance scientific rigor with compassionate care. I am also a strong believer in culturally responsive care, the ways in which socioeconomic and cultural determinants affect mental health outcomes.
Above all, my philosophy is built on the ideals of service, social justice, and that everyone is entitled to high-quality, equitable psychiatric care.
PERSONAL GOALS
Short-Term Goals
Upon finishing my MSN-PMHNP program and ANCC board certification, my immediate goal is to become licensed and begin practicing in a community-based psychiatric mental health clinic within the state of Texas. I am particularly interested in working with underserved populations, including adolescents, veterans, and dual diagnoses. During the first year of practice, I will establish clinical skills in psychiatric evaluations, differential diagnoses, and psychopharmacologic treatments.
I will diversify my treatment options by undergoing further training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and crisis intervention. I will also join the American Psychiatric Nurses Association to stay updated on policy, best practice, and continuing professional development opportunities.
Long-Term Goals
In the coming decade, I envision myself as a leader in an integrated mental health system. My aspiration is to develop a sliding-scale-fee nurse-managed psychiatric clinic with group therapy and peer support for socially at-risk persons with chronic mental illness. I would also like to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, focusing on psychiatric health systems leadership and policy activism.
My hope is to eventually be a preceptor and mentor for students in the PMHNP program, teaching and fostering an atmosphere of ethical, evidence-based practice. Involvement in research in the reduction of mental health disparities among ethnic minorities and the development of community-based interventions that promote resilience and early intervention is a second long-range goal.
SELF-ASSESSMENT
My nursing journey began over a decade ago, rooted in a desire to serve marginalized communities and to bridge the gap between physical and mental healthcare. As a registered nurse, I have worked in various capacities, including med-surg, community health, and outpatient behavioral clinics, which allowed me to understand the intersectionality of mental illness, chronic disease, and social determinants of health.
Enrolling in the PMHNP program at Walden University has sharpened my theoretical foundation and clinical reasoning. I have developed competencies in mental status examinations, suicide risk assessments, psychopharmacology, and brief therapeutic interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). My practicum activities provided me with an opportunity to evaluate patients throughout the lifespan, formulate a treatment plan, and participate in interdisciplinary teamwork. These experiences expressed the significance of patient-centered attention, the presence of therapy, and the organization of follow-up to produce successful results.
My strength is that I am able to establish rapport with patients regardless of their background. I will engage in active listening, empathy, and motivational interviewing to empower patients and encourage adherence. I am also very organized and pay attention to clinical details, which is critical in proper diagnoses and safe prescriptions. I understand, however, that growth is a continuous process. I am currently addressing the issues related to enhancing my efficiency in documentation, billing, and effectiveness in handling pediatric psychiatric disorders.
Creating a professional portfolio has played a significant role in helping me monitor my progress and identify the evidence-based competence linked to my objectives. According to Arthur et al. (2020), the portfolios go beyond presenting the credentials to demonstrate the growth, ethics, and lifelong learning of a practitioner. The contents of my portfolio are CEU certifications, academic credentials, performance assessment, and reflective stories, and they all build the case for my clinical readiness.
Besides, a good portfolio increases the exposure and marketability in the job market. The activity of creating a portfolio will promote the strategic self-evaluation and goal-setting as specified by Mohajer et al. (2023). In this process, I have discovered that leadership roles and advocacy are major fields I need. I have also included the resources by Wright (2024), which suggests employing portfolios as a way of keeping the measurable results, patient testimonies, and QI works.
Finally, my portfolio is a living document, something that would change according to my experiences, challenges, and my goals. It is a reflection of my experience and a guide to where I want to be as a PMHNP.
