Nurse Leader’s Role in Conflict Management
As a nurse leader or manager, addressing conflicts between nurses on the unit requires a structured, empathetic, and detailed approach (American Nurses Association, 2023). I would start by arranging individual meetings with each nurse to manage such situations effectively. During these sessions or meetings, I would actively listen to their perspectives, ensuring they feel heard and understood. This step is crucial for gathering comprehensive information about the conflict from all sides and establishing trust. Following these individual discussions, I would meticulously document the key points raised by each nurse, including specific issues, contributing factors, and any proposed solutions. Notably, accurate documentation is essential for maintaining a clear and transparent record, which is vital for accountability and future reference (Brooks, 2021).
Further, if the conflict is complex or deeply rooted, I would seek assistance from a human resource professional or a conflict resolution specialist to provide additional support and unbiased mediation. Essentially, their expertise can be invaluable in facilitating a fair and effective resolution that considers all perspectives.
To determine if the conflict has been resolved, I would monitor the interactions between the nurses over a specified period, looking for improvements in communication, cooperation, and overall team dynamics. I would also schedule follow-up meetings to discuss progress, address lingering concerns, and reinforce the importance of maintaining a positive work environment (Ronquillo et al., 2023). In addition, I would create an action plan that includes steps for continued improvement and conflict prevention. If the conflict persists or escalates despite these efforts, I would escalate the issue to my supervisor for further intervention, ensuring it is handled at the appropriate level of authority.
