The DECIDE model plays a significant role in healthcare decision-making by assisting healthcare providers in making the right decisions. According to Guo (2020), the main elements of the DECIDE model include defining the problem, establishing a criterion considering all alternatives, identifying the best alternative, developing, and implementing a plan of action, and evaluating and monitoring the feedback and solution when necessary. My role in the DECIDE model will be to evaluate each option and choose the best one. Considering and selecting alternatives in healthcare delivery is important because it improves patient outcomes and increases patient safety. For example, before choosing whether to utilize a treatment, it’s critical to ascertain how various options would affect the patient. Some of the factors that can be considered in selecting alternatives include the side effects of the alternatives, costs, and patient involvement.

The application of the DECIDE model in the healthcare setting is evident in various situations. One instance I’ve encountered in the healthcare industry where the DECIDE model was used involved determining whether to use experimental treatment to treat a patient. The doctors defined the problem as the lack of the patient’s body response to the medication used to treat her condition and later established that the experimental treatment for the patient’s condition would work. Other healthcare providers including nurse practitioners, nurses, and physicians were then engaged in analyzing and selecting alternatives and developing a plan for action. After the treatment process, the doctor monitored the patient’s condition and provided feedback including a solution for the side effects of the experimental treatment on the patient. We the nurses were also involved in providing feedback about the effectiveness of the experimental treatment.
