NURS 4005 – Week 1 Discussion – Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases

NRS 4005 – Week 1 Discussion – Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an emerging disease that should be taken seriously. There are ways to protect oneself and others. According to the CDC, one should stay 6 feet away from others, wash hands often, and wear a mask/covering over mouth and nose (“How to Protect Yourself & Others”, 2020).

Nurses, along with every other healthcare worker, are on the frontlines trying to test and care for patients that have contracted the virus. It puts them at risk of contracting the virus while there is very little that is known about the virus, and there is not a specific treatment or vaccine for this virus yet, according to the CDC (Interim Guidance: Healthcare Professionals 2019-nCoV CDC, 2020).

This disease personally affects my practice in that not only do I have to use standard precautions I am also having to use droplet precautions and sometimes may not know that I am coming in contact with someone that possibly has the virus until it is too late due to being in a clinic that is testing patients and patients not mentioning their symptoms before or that they have come in contact with someone that is positive.

NRS 4005 – Week 1 Discussion – Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases

I believe that this virus is emerging because when this virus was first heard about in China, not much was known about this virus and it was easily spread. Everyone continued to gather during Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day, not knowing that the virus was able to spread very easily among groups of people. This virus is so new that there is no specific treatment or vaccination to prevent the virus from spreading.

It is the nurse’s responsibility to help prevent the disease or any other infectious disease by providing education to patients and the community in general. It is also the nurse’s responsibility to take precautions to keep from contracting the virus or spreading it from one patient to another. Overall, nurses are on the front lines in caring for patients, but it takes a whole team of healthcare professionals to care for the sick and to try to prevent and manage any infectious diseases.
