NURS 3100 Week 5 Discussion – Leading Civility in the Workplace

NURS 3100 Week 5 Discussion – Leading Civility in the Workplace

For this week’s discussion post, I decided to write about how I would respond to the scenario.

I had the same reaction as everyone else. I was ashamed and embarrassed for them. As healthcare providers, we have a responsibility to ensure we provide quality care. I am not sure how that could happen in the presented scenario, as everyone made it very obvious they were there to work independently and not collaboratively. As nurses, we play a critical role in creating a culture of civility and respect (Clark, 2010). Incivility is defined as rude or disruptive behavior that may result in psychological or physiological distress for the people involved and, if left unaddressed, may progress into threatening situations (Clark, 2010). On the other end of the spectrum, civility is defined as an authentic respect for others that requires time, presence, willingness to engage in genuine discourse, and intention to seek common ground (Clark, 2010). The nurse is the one who is by the patient’s side the most. It is our responsibility to ensure that collaboration from all interdisciplinary members involved in care occurs, and we must do this respectfully.

In this situation, I would have reminded everyone that their attention and focus were needed, and we all needed to work together to ensure the patient received high-quality care. How would we feel if the patient was one of your family members? I would encourage them to listen and participate in all reports from the other departments. I would remind them that the way to ensure quality care is to work collaboratively as a team and how important each one of our roles is to do so. Where I currently work, we have daily IDT (Interdisciplinary Team) rounds.

NURS 3100 Week 5 Discussion – Leading Civility in the Workplace

The Clinical Manager on the unit, the Social Worker, the Care Managers, and the physicians meet to discuss the progress of the patient’s care. We try to identify any anticipated needs and make a plan for discharge. While not every discipline is involved, we have a computer open and refer to notes from PT, OT, and pharmacy when pertinent. I have never witnessed any behaviors like those seen in the case scenario, but I would like to think if I did, I would respond as above.

I agree with Clark that acting civilly and respectfully is not always easy. It is a choice. By choosing civility, we are making the right decision to ensure our patients receive high-quality care. We are choosing to lead with our hearts as well as our heads and to continue to make nursing the most trusted profession (Clark, 2010).
