NURS 3100 Week 4 Discussion – The Essence of Nursing
As I reflect on ways that I could improve and grow as a leader, I’m reassured that furthering my skills and knowledge by returning to school at Walden was a wise decision.
As I further my education and acquire new skills that will further grow me as an efficient leader in the workplace, there are specific skills that I find critical to improving patient care and nurse retention.
According to Ma et al. (2015), Nurses reported lower intent to leave, higher job satisfaction, and better quality of care in units with better collaboration and stronger nursing leadership. Strong nursing leadership is vital for an institution to thrive. The past two years, we have had a recent change in nursing leadership in our unit and have had our manager and director replaced, and we moved into a new building, a beautiful state-of-the-art Women and Children’s Pavilion. With these recent changes, we have had low morale in the workplace, and many of our most experienced staff nurses have left in search of better workflow and work environments. As a mother-baby RN, I have been privileged to have taken a position as a fill-in charge Nurse for the past two years. It is a role that I like to take very seriously, and I would like to use this opportunity to be able to impart things I learned during my years of study at Walden. NURS 3100 Week 4 Discussion – The Essence of Nursing
According to Ma et al.(2015), Creating a caring environment of active collaboration among care providers and nursing leadership can help hospitals maintain a competitive nursing workforce supporting a high quality of care (Ma, Shang, & Bott, 2015). As I continue to grow as a student and an RN while I attend Walden University, I can only hope to acquire more skills and be better equipped to be an effective leader that inspires our staff and leads with integrity, honesty, and optimism. It is my goal to increase any skills and knowledge required to improve quality care and improve patient outcomes, and nurse retention.
