NURS 3100 Week 2 Discussion – The Most Trusted Profession

NURS 3100 Week 2 Discussion – The Most Trusted Profession

Before I entered the nursing profession, I was aware that nurse is held to a higher standard than many other professions. In my view, nurses were expected to be truthful and practice to the highest standards. According to Fitzpatrick (2015), the nurse is the key to providing effective, compassionate, and safe care. Nurses spend the most time with patients (Fitzpatrick, 2015). They also get to know them in more detail than the physician (Fitzpatrick, 2015).

My passion for nursing began when I earned my degree in public health. In public health, my work was more community based, but I wanted to be able to work with people on an individual level, so nursing was the best thing for me. I believe my personality and skills are a good fit for nursing, as I can remain calm in stressful situations, pay attention to small detail, and I can think critically. These skills are a great aspect to nurses because a nurse has to be able to detect subtle changes in patients and report findings to the physician for appropriate care (Fitzpatrick, 2015). I currently work in administration at a skilled nursing facility. In my day to day, I interact with patients and their families. No two days are ever the same. One day I can be assessing a patient after a fall and the next day, reporting abnormal labs. My job is to get to know the patients, maintain a safe environment for them, and ensure they receive the medical care they need. By getting to know the patients, I can use my nursing skills, including assessing, diagnosing, planning, intervening, and evaluating. I am always assessing throughout my day, as many patients are unable to express their needs.

As Fitzgerald (2015) stated that the nurse is the first on the scene when patients experience changes. Nurses are vital to health care and will continue to remain valuable in the future. I will continue to provide the best care that I can. Also, by furthering my education to become a Nurse Practitioner, I will be able to provide safe, honest, ethical, and quality care to my patients. I want to be the voice for the patient and serve as their advocate.
