In life, whether workplace, school or any task, time management is essential to increase your productivity or to attain your desired goal or outcome that is beneficial to the person. For instance, in our work as registered nurses, our goals are to achieve and maintain high-quality care for patients, which can lead to their health condition improvement and satisfaction. But being a student at any school or university, including Walden University, especially to earn my MSN (Family Nurse Practitioner) is to acquire knowledge. This knowledge helps me become an expert on how to deal with changes in the United States healthcare management which would include giving patient quality care, handling information technology (IT), maintaining safety, and improving other health condition goals. The question here is how I can attain these goals as a Walden University student without any distractions. What I do to manage my distractions and get the support I need to succeed is that I take responsibility for my study plan actions for when I become successful. Again as a student at Walden, should I make rituals (routines) for my study guides to decrease and avoid distraction? Either techniques or methods I choose, time management and avoidance/reduction of distraction, is the key to attaining my goals to be a successful Walden Student.

Distractions are inevitable in our daily lives due to being involved with people and other changes that occur in our operational system. As a student at Walden University, developing rituals would help me eliminate distractions and decrease decision-making time, thereby assisting in achieving my student goals with reduced stress levels. The routine that has worked for me is to make a “To do list.” I always make a lot of lists of what I want to achieve on a daily basis, then prioritize them by assigning a specific time for each ritual. For example, I separate time for studying and online school work (9 hours day-6 hours a day in the morning and 3 hours at night), then I give my family 3 hours a day, social activities get 3 hours, and health/sleep is 9 hours. With these rituals, I can plan my schedule daily to do trial and error to know what works best for me; as it works, I stick with the rituals for a long time, provided it’s comfortable and less stressful. I proceed to weekly, then monthly. These are how my rituals work as I go on during the week.

My ritual every Saturday to Sunday is to work 16 hours which I do not study. But Monday through Friday, I wake up at 5 am to pray, and I wake my children up at 5:30 am to get ready for school. While I prepare breakfast for them, they do what they have to do before we leave the house at 7 am to drop them off at their different schools and then get back home at 7:50 am. At 8 am, I go to my online classroom for 2 hours and then take a 15-minute break before I proceed to study and do my discussion and assignment work for 4 hours. I turn my phone on silent mode during my online and study hours, then check for messages during my breaks. I text people back when I am free. During my study hours, I try to save all my discussions, assignments, and other important documents to my flash drive and my computer, including my backup system, to avoid losing them. When I need help with the computer, I call the Walden technical support system, but if I have a question, then I email my instructor or another student. Then if I have a problem in regard to my academics, I try to contact my academic advisor, and if I have any financial aid issues, then I contact Walden’s financial aid department to assist me. If I have problems with my writing during discussions and assignments, I utilize Walden’s support system by using the Grammarly website. I log in to assess grammatical writing errors. When my children get back from school at 3:30 pm, I try to assist them with their homework; I fix their dinner and attend to their other needs. Then, I have a few extra hours to relax and assess my internet to watch movies and do other personal things that are important. At 8 pm, we pray, and they go to bed to sleep. Then, I will resume studying for another 3 hours. I take 15-minute breaks in between one and a half hours. William (n.d) mentioned “10 proven time management skills you should learn such as Set goals, Prioritizing, keeping a task list, schedule tasks, focusing one task at a time, minimizing distraction, don’t prolong any task, taking breaks, say “no” and delegate tasks. Some of his time management skills are similar to my ritual habits which to that I agree works.

With the above rituals, I try to schedule my online classroom access and study to do my discussion and assignment with research during my peak time which is in the morning from 8 am to 2 pm and at night from 8 pm to 11 pm, whereby my children would not be able to distract me. My rituals include being in a quiet environment at home, which enhances my concentration and learning without distractions. As a student at Walden University, my usual routines will assist me in managing my time and help me be a successful student and achieve my goals in the participation of my roles. I tend to share and maintain the rituals that work best for me. I do not waste time on irrelevant matters. In fact, there is no “one size fits all” technique in making a time management ritual.
