Most research conducted on patient involvement relevant to patient safety concerns a patient’s perspective, limiting knowledge of the healthcare professionals’ view on patient participation. The study contributes to the research field by addressing the nurses’ perspective compared to much previous work that has concerned patient views. Further, the study provides insights into how patient involvement for safer care can be achieved in the provider‐patient interaction (Skagerström et al., 2017).

Yes, the study aims to explore nurses’ perceptions and experiences of patient involvement relevant to patient safety (Skagerström et al., 2017). The nurses in this study believe they can influence patient participation and are responsible for doing so. The patients are responsible for being active in meetings with healthcare professionals.

This study used a qualitative design using individual semi-structured interviews. Qualitative descriptive studies comprise a valuable methodologic approach using open‐ended interviews where the phenomenon under study is explored in an interaction between the interviewer and the interviewee (Skagerström et al., 2017).

Yes, patient safety has progressed from being insignificant in healthcare to one of the fundamental problems for healthcare professionals and policymakers (Skagerström et al., 2017). The author describes the increasing interest in involving patients in safety-related initiatives and how the interaction with the healthcare professional can improve healthcare safety in many ways.

Describe the theoretical framework for the research study.

Nurses were recruited from five different healthcare facilities in Sweden, and interviews were conducted with registered nurses (11) and nurse assistants (8) in 2015-2016. The data collected from the discussion was analyzed using conventional content analysis (Skagerström et al., 2017). Analysis of the data yielded four categories related to patient involvement for enhanced patient safety: healthcare professionals’ ways of influencing patient participation for safer care, patients’ ways of controlling patient involvement for safer care, barriers to patient involvement for safer care, and relevance of patient involvement for safer care (Skagerström et al., 2017).

The objective of the research is to explore perceptions nurses have on patient involvement relevant to their safety based on past experiences nurses have had with patients. According to the nurses, involvement can be hindered by factors related to the patient, the healthcare provider, and the healthcare system. However, respondents expressed that patient involvement can lead to safer care and benefits for individual patients.

The study results emphasized that patient involvement is a shared responsibility between the patient and healthcare professionals. Many nurses also felt that it is essential to provide opportunities for the patient to participate. Although strengths and limitations were not directly mentioned, the following is what I’ve gathered based on the research objective and their results:

Strengths:

The study focused on interviewing nurses and nurse’s assistants directly, making their opinions more reliable.

A sampling strategy was used to get nurses working in different healthcare facilities with patients with multiple health statuses.

Several researchers independently performed the initial data coding to maintain rigour (Skagerström et al., 2017).

Limitations:

All the authors and adjustments discussed in the classification of the data were made until all were satisfied (Skagerström et al., 2017).

A patient’s lack of medical knowledge can lead to them not participating in their safety plan while staying in a hospital.

Nurses believe that healthcare professionals and patients have a shared responsibility for participation to occur.
Nurses emphasized the importance of their initiatives to achieve patient involvement by initiating dialogue and providing an environment where the patient can ask questions.
Nurses expressed that some barriers to participation in safer care were seen in patients, healthcare professionals, and the healthcare system.

These key findings are relevant to clinical practice as healthcare facilities must find time and appropriate environments to encourage open dialogue between patients and their nurses/ healthcare professionals. If having an open discussion and creating a safe environment is not something the staff is not confident in, training can be offered to provide tips on how to give that part of care to the patients.
