When looking into new innovations to incorporate into a certain healthcare setting, it is important to understand first how that innovation will be successful. To understand this, you must understand the mission of your healthcare setting, the services that are already provided, and who this healthcare setting is serving within the community. When researching which innovation would work within my own healthcare setting, I have to identify needs within my community, the impact this innovation would have on the community, and how to maintain and sustain this innovation.

The innovation I believe would be most successful within my local healthcare setting is the mHealth, getwell network. Based on the needs identified within my community, this leads me to predict this innovation would be successful. Living in a rural community, there can be difficulty seeking care, getting to a hospital, and even getting access to specialists. This need of the community can be better met by implementing the mHealth getwell network, which has a focus on digital rounding. This innovation allows for an increase in speed of care, an increase in efficiency, and the ability to triage requests to the appropriate team, allowing for more referrals and access to more specialties (“get well network,” n.d.). Another need of the community is adherence to treatment. How healthcare is accessed and delivered can help improve medication adherence among rural residents (Martin et al., 2011). The mHealth, get well network innovation allows for care teams to engage with patients across their care journey with automated virtual check-ins (“getwell network,” n.d.). This allows patients in need of care to have access at the right time and be given the right information regarding their care. This also allows care teams to reach more patients within the community, making the patients feel like their care team is with them every step through their healthcare journey.

Two intrinsic factors specific to my health organization that will impact the success of this innovation include involving a research and development team and appointing nurse champions. Having a research and development team assists in finding evidence-based research for new innovations and being able to identify what aspects of this innovation have worked in the past and what hasn’t worked (Wenke et al., 2016). This allows for the team to make specific and needed changes to the innovation that will have a better focus on the healthcare organization’s mission and goals. Appointing nurse champions allows for improved outcomes and quality for patients across different clinical settings. Nurse champions are critical for moving new innovations through the phases of initiation, development, and implementation (Shaw et al., 2012). Nurse champions can also improve communication through interdepartmental teams, allowing for more input and feedback for new innovations.

Two extrinsic factors specific to my health organization that will impact the success of this innovation include the right type of innovation and the right place. Does this innovation have an appeal to it, and does the community have a need for this innovation, allowing for sustainability? Because this rural community struggles with access to healthcare as well as adherence to treatment, the new innovation would not be disruptive to the community but would allow for gradual and continuous improvement of existing services.

When predicting the sustainability of the new innovation, important factors to consider include how long it could be successful, how it is positive to the health organization as well as the community, structures in place to assist with making it last, and the teams in place to maintain it. To predict how long a new innovation can be successful involves evidence-based research on similar innovations. This can also assist in how to maintain it when understanding what has worked and what hasn’t worked in the past. Involving specific teams, such as a research and development team, as well as nurse champions, can assist in creating a culture within the healthcare organization assisting in these changes and increasing communication between departments with their suggestions and concerns. The sustainability of innovations in healthcare settings is uniquely influenced by its culture. Having strong leadership, the support of stakeholders nurse champions, and alignment with the organization’s vision, mission, and goals allows for the innovations to be improved, modified, and supported.
