NSG 4076 Week 5 Discussion
Parish nurses believe the patient has holistic needs and that the mind, body, and spirit all need to be cared for in order to promote health. Faith communities contribute to national health objectives in a variety of ways through crisis intervention, health education, emotional support, family integrity promotion, coping enhancement, forgiveness facilitation, and much more.
There have been collaborative projects in which parish nurses partner with others in the community, such as pharmacists, university faculty, and hospital staff, to provide free health screenings and consultation services, counseling and education on the importance of medication adherence and lifestyle modifications, and efforts to improve medication self-care in elderly patients. King and Tessaro (2009) found that parish nurses promote communication and resource links and also frequently provide education and counseling. The results of their study reflect a nursing practice focused on health promotion. Partnerships between parish nurses and other nurses in the community create a greater opportunity to increase awareness and provide resources to those who need it. In addition, collaboration between these groups could potentially decrease redundancy and help to promote the goals of each other’s group.

In regard to maternal health during pregnancy, the parish nurse can help guide the patient away from high-risk behaviors and towards a more spiritual approach to promoting health in themselves and their babies. Parish nurses work with vulnerable patient populations such as the elderly, the homeless, those with mental health issues, and those in low-income populations.
