The rural area has more health problems when compared to urban areas. Factors attributable to the high rate of health problems in rural areas include inaccessibility to health care because people in rural areas have to travel long distances to access care (Anderson et al., 2015). In addition, there are few healthcare facilities in rural areas when compared to urban areas, and hence, people in rural areas face challenges when accessing care, and hence, their diseases are diagnosed late, reducing the curative probability. People in rural areas have to travel long distances to access routine screening and checkups, and thus, they might not be able to get these health services as required (Anderson et al., 2015). Rural areas also have a lesser number of healthcare professionals, and some specialists may not be available at all in rural areas.
Moreover, exposure to certain chemicals in rural areas may cause some types of cancers for the rural inhabitants. Lack of financial ability to pay for healthcare services and lack of health literacy are other factors that contribute to the high rate of health problems in rural areas (Anderson et al., 2015). Moreover, people in rural areas may have limited access to healthy foods and fewer opportunities to take part in physical activities and exercises in comparison to their urban counterparts (Oladipo, 2014). Rural inhabitants also have higher rates of alcohol intake and smoking, and this exposes them to many chronic diseases.
The common health problems in rural areas include obesity, hypertension, chronic lower respiratory disease, and some forms of cancer.
