NR439 Week 7 Discussion – Applying and Sharing Evidence to Practice

NR439 Week 7 Discussion – Applying and Sharing Evidence to Practice

The article I am going to be discussing is by Fu, M, titled “Effectiveness of a community-based diabetes self-management intervention for Chinese adults with Type 2 diabetes”. This was a pilot study with the aim of illustrating how patient self-management is important in improving the lives of Chinese adults with type 2 diabetes.

Using several different questionnaires to obtain information from patients pertaining to; data on diabetes knowledge, diabetes self-management, fasting blood glucose level, blood pressure, body mass index, and waist circumference to evaluate the effectiveness of patient self-management, it was concluded after a 6-week diabetes self-management educational program that, patients with type 2 diabetes showed positive effects in diabetes knowledge and clinical outcome. In the study, group education was also instrumental in improving diabetes knowledge and self-management and in controlling blood glucose for this sample group (Fu, M, 2015). Professional nurses rely on research findings to inform their practice decisions; they use critical thinking to apply research directly to specific patient care situations (Houser, 2018). The evidence revealed in this article is how patient education could result in good patient self-management, thereby improving patients’ quality of life. Ensuring that stroke patients and their families are educated on the importance of turning and repositioning, in addition to other interventions like good skin care, proper nutrition, etc., could prevent pressure ulcers, thereby improving the quality of life for the patients with stroke.

My Picot question was, has the introduction of specialty mattresses with a strict turning and repositioning schedule helped decrease the occurrence of pressure ulcers in stroke patients on the unit?

P– (Patient, population, or problem): Patients who are immobile as a result of a stroke

I– (Intervention): patient will be on the specialty mattress with a strict turning and repositioning schedule.

C– (Comparison with other treatment/current practice): Previously, we had regular mattresses with a strict turn and reposition schedule.

O– (Desired outcome): We are going to see zero HAPU with the use of a specialty mattress within the next month.

T– (Duration): 1 month

I would create some sought of the chart, will briefly explain the significance of the findings to my colleagues, and then post it on the huddle board for my colleagues to be able to read at their leisure time. Reinforcing the importance of patient education with staff during monthly meetings will be another way of sharing my research study.
