NR 505 Week 8 Discussion – Peer Review

This course has taught me so much about evidence-based practice and how to apply it to practice. Evidence-based practice is a “problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making” in which the information being implemented is reliable evidence (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p. 604). I have learned how to formulate a proper PICO(T) research question and how to answer it. I have also learned about different types of research studies and how to analyze, critique, and interpret them. There are four types of studies that were discussed. Predictive studies address questions of risk and create a theory to answer the question using data found through research. Prescriptive studies are experimental studies that determine whether or not a cure can be formulated based on testing various interventions. Descriptive studies are non-experimental studies in which information is collected by researchers through methods such as surveys and interviews, and explanatory studies are studies that recognize similarities and differences between multiple variables or of one variable across many different groups (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2016). I have also learned how to observe public health issues in various scenarios and come up with evidence-based solutions to find ways to resolve them. I have learned about different sampling methods when selecting a sample for an experiment and also how to compare and analyze different types of research studies. Most importantly, I have learned how to use evidence-based practice to optimize patient outcomes. It is important for healthcare providers to implement evidence-based research in practice because it is a professional competency that all healthcare providers should be aware of (Mehrdad, Joolaee, Joulaee, & Bahrani, 2012). I will implement the skills I have acquired throughout this course in my current and future practice.
