NR 505 Week 8 Discussion – Collaboration Café
Family Nurse Practitioners serve as role models for other healthcare providers by teaching and assisting them in future ways to learn and implement new knowledge in practice. In order to be able to implement and encourage the use of evidence-based practice (EBP) in the clinical setting, the advanced practice nurse will first communicate with the other healthcare providers to find out their point of view regarding using evidence-based practice. My goal is to be a Family Nurse Practitioner who promotes the use of evidence-based practice in daily practice by increasing the use of clinical guidelines and development of health care standards, providing conditions, and accessing resources to research results such as time, resources of human, financial, and equipment, encouraging and supporting other employees interested in evidence-based practice.
A good way to foster an organizational culture that promotes evidence-based practice is by communication. Good communication can help decrease the space that exists between evidence-based practice, research, and practice. Communication skills are known to be an important factor in narrowing the gap between evidence-based practice and patient-centered care and in improving patient health outcomes (Dadich & Hosseinzadeh, 2016). Healthcare practitioners need to be effective and concise at communicating the use of evidence-based practice in order to provide the staff with reassurance and confidence. Establishing open communication within the organization to commit to a collaborative and interdisciplinary, or interprofessional, team approach, be open to input from all staff members, and encourage frequent and honest conversation among the staff members. Promoting evidence-based practice throughout the entire organization is essential to ensure all providers are at the same level of new data and knowledge that can benefit the patients as well as the staff. The use of teamwork is essential to promote evidence-based. Patients’ health care consists of a multidisciplinary team, which requires all healthcare providers to embrace a collaborative, team-based approach to care. Patients, healthcare team members, and the organization all benefit from interprofessional teamwork.

If one staff member constantly says, “We have never done it this way—why change?” I would listen to his concerns and fears of why he believes a change is not necessary. Also, I would provide him with evidence-based data that will give him more knowledge of the benefits of implementing evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice is clinical decision-making. Process in which providers use research-based knowledge to inform their decisions about the care provided to patients (Black, Balneaves, Garossino, Puyat, & Qian, 2015).

Question
NR 505 Week 8 Discussion – Collaboration Café
You are a nurse leader in your future advanced practice track-based setting. You notice that although nurses say they use evidence-based practice (EBP), you find very few examples of this. As the leader, you decide to develop an environment that fosters EBP. Please respond to each of the following topics.
How would you role model EBP in your future advanced practice setting? Be specific!
How would you foster an organizational culture that promotes EBP? How would you promote EBP throughout the entire organization?
You have one staff member who constantly says, “We have never done it this way—why change?” What actions would you take to change him or her from a distracter to a promoter of EBP?
