Using references, identify the research results that you could use in your practice setting.

The result of the article titled “The Effect of Self-Care Behaviors Education on Quality of Life in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Clinical Trial”(Towhid et al., 2017, p. 1). Ninety patients with Type II diabetes were selected for the study. Patients were randomly chosen and assigned into two groups: a control group and a non-control group. Data was collected using a standard questionnaire divided into two phases before and three months after the educational. The result of the study has shown that knowledge, attitudes, and self-care behaviors significantly increased in the intervention group, but change was not significant in the control group. Also, the educational intervention had a significant effect in improving the quality of life in all its dimensions compared to the control group.

Determine the fit, feasibility, and appropriateness of the result for your practice setting.

According to Booth et al. (2015), “fit is the extent to which an intervention or activity fits with or is apt in a situation” (p. 2). The fit to implement an early educational program for young patients with diabetes is a great need. Almost all young patients with diabetes are at greater risk for major other illnesses related to diabetes. By implementing the program, it will help reduce the number of patients with diabetes and improve their quality of life.

Booth et al. (2015) also stated, “Feasibility is about whether or not an activity or intervention is physically, culturally or financially practical or possible” (p. 2). The feasibility of the early educational diabetes program intervention is physically and financially practical for a medsurge unit. It is not only a practical intervention for staff to learn and implement, but it is also cost-saving for the hospital. The patients must be physically and mentally prepared to receive the education provided by the staff.

Booth et al. (2015) mentioned that “appropriateness is the extent to which an intervention or activity is positively experienced” (p. 2). The early diabetes education intervention should be perceived well by staff nurses and physicians because it can be integrated with the code of ethics, “Do no harm.” Patients need to feel welcome and not be judged by their condition. Prior to the program, staff would need to be trained on how to properly educate patients without harming them physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA), outline an action plan.

Plan- The first step would be to educate staff on the components of the diabetes education program. Explaining why each element is important and providing rationales supported by evidence. Once all staff members understand the program, then a few patients will be identified for the sample group.

Do- The identified group of patients would receive the diabetes educational intervention. During this stage, the trial will start and determine if anything needs to be changed or addressed. During this process, all changes, comments, and concerns would be taken into consideration. Results from the small sample will be analyzed and decided if the intervention is ready to be implemented on a large scale. During this process, the diabetes educational program would be implemented throughout the Medsurge unit.

Identify the resources (physical, personal, technology) needed to implement your action plan.

A multidisciplinary team is needed to implement my action plan. The team will include physicians, nurses, nurse managers, diabetes resource nurses, and learning specialists. I will also need pamphlets and apps related to diabetes.

Determine the criteria that you would use to determine whether the implementation of your project was successful.

The criteria that would determine if the implementation of early diabetes education was effective would be a reduced number of patients with diabetes in the medsurge unit. To ensure effectiveness, the diabetes education checklist would serve to monitor compliance with the education program.

Identify one future research study that would be useful in extending knowledge of your selected project result.

One future research project that would be useful in extending the knowledge of the early diabetes education program is to determine if education updates on diabetes and incidences have an impact on the prevention of diabetes.
