The majority of the issues that impact the healthcare industry include the emergence of formidable aggressive illnesses, an increase in the patient population with chronic complex diseases, a shortage of nurses, increased demand for health resources, health reform, increasing cost of care, and other factors that critically affect the capability to meet the demands and expectations of the society. According to Cronshaw et al. (2021), a healthcare environment that nurtures a culture of excellence does not limit itself to the ability to simply meet the level of competence set in the standards of quality care delivery but to continually challenge the status quo and develop interventions to further improve and exceed expectations. The importance of a mission, vision, and values defines the identity of an organization and reflects a guiding principle that cultivates excellence and a sense of purpose for its employees and workers (Min et al., 2020). The purpose of this paper is to explore the importance of a culture of excellence in an identified healthcare organization and understand the role of vision, mission, and values, including the significance of leadership strategies that foster excellence in nursing practice.

Culture of Excellence

The concept of excellence is described by Medeiros (2020) as a “constantly moving target that strives to keep moving beyond expectations and to continually improve.” Achieving excellence in an organization requires the need to recognize and focus on the development and motivation of its employees and teams with the necessary competencies and foundational elements (Medeiros, 2020). Among the most profound foundational elements described by Medeiros (2020) pertaining to organizational characteristics that reflect a culture of excellence include a learning environment, shared decision-making, and planning for lasting change. A learning environment fosters a culture of excellence by motivating and encouraging nurses and healthcare workers to develop competence in knowledge, skills, and continued education through the value of research outcomes and evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice is a robust program that outlines and provides continued education at all levels of the organization that guarantees effective changes and best practices in patient care and treatment. The aspect of shared decision-making is a groundwork that cultivates excellence and inspires leadership among the staff by sharing power in governance to increase engagement, accountability, ownership of improvement, collaboration, and job satisfaction. The organizational characteristic of planning for a lasting change promotes the cultivation of excellence because it shows the future aim and necessary changes for improvement and application of innovation that is needed in the organization. Organizational planning is not only limited to infrastructure but also supports improvement in healthcare processes and continued education to increase the level of competence in the point of care and promotion among the staff.

The emphasis on a learning environment, evidence-based practice, and continued education in the culture of excellence plays a profound and critical factor in the specialty track of nurse education because it provides the profound foundation of credible, reliable, and valid information or evidence on the current best care practices and interventions that can be used to educate students and new nurses. Nurse educators are the mentors and pillars that play a significant role in guiding and mentoring students and new nurses in receiving high-quality nursing education, knowledge, and skills to competently achieve excellence in their chosen field of practice (Mthiyane & Habedi, 2018).

The mission described by the Montefiore Medical Center (2022) is to heal, teach, discover, and advance the health of the community that they serve. This mission puts emphasis on the dedication of the organization toward the promotion of health education, compassionate care, and advancement in both research and technology. The vision of Montefiore is to become a premier academic medical center that transforms health through the application of the most up-to-date treatment interventions from research and technology that challenge the limits of medicine (Montefiore Medical Center, 2022). There are five organizational values that are focused on the philosophy of care, which include humanity, innovation, teamwork, diversity, and equity.

The emphasis of the philosophy of care defined in the values of the selected organization is to guide the healthcare workers in pursuing excellence in care delivery that fosters compassion as an attribute of humanity, including the implementation of innovative changes guided by research and evidence-based practice. The emphasis on collaboration through the engagement of specialized disciplines while embracing a diverse workforce in establishing the best quality of care that is fair and equitable for all members of the community reflects a culture that pursues excellence. The vision, mission, and values of the Montefiore Medical Center reflect a profound focus that guides the organization in pursuing excellence in clinical practice. The vision, mission, and values capture the heart of the image of an organization, which reflects the traits, characteristics, unified purpose, and culture of excellence (Slåtten et al., 2021).

Leading a Culture of Excellence

Leadership plays a critical role in nurturing a culture of excellence within the healthcare organization and the successful implementation of the mission, vision, and values. Nurse leaders play a significant part in influencing behaviors and culture in the practice environment that promotes motivation and engagement of the nursing staff to cope with the challenges and demands of nursing practice (Bergstedt & Wei, 2020). Mentoring is a leadership strategy that promotes a culture of excellence because it provides support, guidance, and instruction that will enhance the knowledge, skills, and smooth adaptation or transition of the student or new nurse professional into the clinical practice setting. Transparency and open communication allow the leader to establish trust and positive working relations with the team, which increases job satisfaction because it allows the staff to feel that their concerns are heard and advocated (Bergstedt & Wei, 2020). The Chamberlain model of care puts forward an emphasis on the importance of self-care and developing professional competence to enhance their knowledge, skills, and ability to engage, which are directly addressed through open communication and mentoring strategies.

Conclusion

The concept of a culture of excellence is a continuous process of improvement that seeks to surpass the status quo to bring about the needed changes that invoke the best quality of care delivery. A culture of excellence is influenced by leadership roles and strategies that are implemented by leaders in order to inspire and motivate the staff to excel and adapt to the shared values employed in the principles, values, and vision of the organization. The vision, mission, and values of the Montefiore organization systematically support a culture of excellence through the emphasis on innovation, research, and continued education that warrants the professional growth of nurses and the best treatment intervention for the patient population. This assignment has allowed me to value the importance of continued education, research outcomes, and evidence-based practice as a profound foundation in nurturing a culture of excellence, especially in the specialty track of nurse education and in an MSN-prepared nurse.
