NR 504 Week 4 Discussion – Leading Others – Implications of Personal Leadership Style

NR 504 Week 4 Discussion – Leading Others – Implications of Personal Leadership Style

Ethics is important in decision-making (Lakshmi, 2014). This is true, especially in a healthcare organization that deals with life matters. This was firmly rooted in justice, fairness based on equality, respect for human dignity, and environmental responsibility.

Working in a hospital with people coming in and out of the workplace, conflict arises at times. From security to visitors, staff to patients, management to staff, and staff-to-staff conflicts, I have seen them all. What can we do as leaders to prevent these from happening? How do we resolve them appropriately? Following our codes of ethics helps us decide on what appropriate approach we should take in these circumstances.

There was an event recent in my work unit where the father took his son out of state to prevent him from getting chemotherapy. His belief is to protect him from harmful drugs that can kill his son. The ethics committee was called to a meeting and has filed this case in court. They were able to take the child to the hospital, where he underwent treatment with his mother at the bedside and his father under supervised visits. There is an ethical responsibility for healthcare leaders to meet the community, patient, and employee expectations regarding quality, access, privacy, and safety (Donnellan, 2014). The child’s health was now improved and in remission.

Understanding the ethical commitment of a nurse leader to the patient’s good affected the resolution of this ethical situation. In this situation, the healthcare provider showed beneficence, which is the desire to do good, and nonmaleficence to avoid harm by treating the illness. I respected the decision, and I think it was the appropriate course of action to benefit the patient.
