Leadership is an important quality for one to possess in a nursing career. In nursing, leaders need to be able to manage ancillary staff in advanced practice roles. To be a leader, you should be able to guide other nurses, members of the community, and students. A role in leadership means that your peers respect and trust you to go above and beyond and have a passion for the work you are doing.

One leadership theory or style that aligns with my personal philosophy and leadership stance is transformational leadership. The transformational leadership style allows an individual to identify the need for change and helps guide the change by inspiring others and implementing the change.

I believe transformational leadership theory aligns with my personal leadership stance because a transformational leader can connect with others in a way that can increase motivation in the workplace. Transformational leadership in the workplace creates a healthy environment to motivate others to exceed expectations. Specifically, the transformational leadership role can be applied in my future MSN role as a nurse educator. In education, transformational leadership is needed to help students develop a positive attitude through examples of being a positive influencer. I believe transformational leadership theory will benefit my role in the future as a nurse educator. With transformational leadership, teamwork can be emphasized and practiced throughout one’s career or experience. “Embracing transformational leadership (TFL) as a framework for developing leadership competencies in academic administrators, faculty, and students is one opportunity for cultivating a team-focused faculty culture” (Fischer, 2017). A formal role as a nurse educator would be making sure the students understand the information provided to them to help improve their nursing skills.

At this point in my career, I have acquired a few leadership roles that are formal or informal in the operating room as a circulator. One informal role I have in my current nursing practice is being an expert with equipment in the operating room. I am a resource for students and new nurses who are orienting to become nurse circulators. As an educator, I will continue to be an expert resource for members of the operating room who may have questions or issues with equipment being used for surgery.

I currently possess the responsibility of teaching the information I have obtained and sharing my knowledge to help students and orienteers understand and use the information given appropriately. As a nurse educator, I will help mold new nurses and students’ nursing practice to become more confident in their practice. To help others be successful, we need to continue perfecting nursing education programs to help develop strong, independent nurses. A good leader wants all students to be successful but needs to be able to realize not all students want to succeed. This may be an implication in my future MSN role as a nurse educator.
