NR 503 Week 7 Discussion-Global and Environmental Health

I found an article from the New York Times explaining how the United States has recorded its most coronavirus, or COVID-19, related deaths over a week. Within a week, 2,249 deaths broke the country’s record of 2,232, set at the beginning of the pandemic in April (Goodman, J., & Delkic, M., 2020). The United States is approaching 300,000 deaths, with about 283,000 recorded now. The nation averages about 200,000 cases per day, and in total recorded over 15 million cases (Goodman, J., & Delkic, M., 2020). In our class, causation is an increase in exposure that causes an increase in the disease, in this case, the coronavirus. A primary intervention for this virus would be a vaccine wh, which the nation is working hard towards. We minimize exposure by wearing masks, staying indoors, washing our hands, and maintaining healthy sanitization (WHO, 2020).

A secondary intervention would be to test for the virus. Many places offer drive-through testing, and hospitals are swabbing patients regardless of their initial diagnosis. A tertiary intervention would be administering medications such as remdesivir, convalescent plasma, dexamethasone, vitamin C, and zinc (Richardson, C., Bhagani, S., & Pollara, G., 2020). These are all FDA-approved medications that the hospitals have been giving patients to fight the coronavirus. In addition, the epidemiological triangle is a model that consists of three interactive factors: the causative agent, a susceptible host, and the environment. The epidemiological triangle for the coronavirus is so vague and broad that it is difficult to combat. The causative agent is the virus, which uses all humans, regardless of age, race, or gender, as a host. The virus can live on virtually any surface for three days. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that one also practices respiratory etiquette (WHO, 2020). As a nurse practitioner, the best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well-informed about the virus, the disease it causes, and how it spreads. It is also important to educate patients on a level they can understand and stress the patient’s health and how their choices can affect the community.

NR 503 Week 7 Discussion-Global and Environmental Health

Please go to a lay press newspaper like The Washington Post, The New York Times, or other national newspapers.

Locate an article with global health implications, such as malaria, untreated strep throat, or other diseases in developing countries. Other topic areas may address environmental global health issues, for example, safe water, sanitation, or oral.

After you locate and read over the article, respond to the following prompt:

  • During NR503, we discussed the web of causation, epidemiological triangle, inter-professional collaboration, and other population health and epidemiology concepts. In responding to your chosen article in this week’s discussion board, synthesize and integrate these course concepts and other terminology in weekly modules. For example, integrate into your writing information from the World Health Organization and the SDGs or include social justice theory in your article analysis. The focus is up to you, but be sure to compare and contrast, integrate, and think critically as you present your discussion board.
