In Week One, I learned about the history of nursing theory development and how nursing leaders struggled to gain recognition for nursing as a profession. Without theory to explain the focus of the nursing discipline, the work would lose direction and knowledge to advance the field. Nursing theory provides the structure of practice and the means of supporting a nurse’s decision based on intuition.

As Butts & Rich (2021) explained, when preparing for my new role, I must change my thought and define nursing as more than a list of tasks. Understanding the role of advanced practice nurses and the theoretical evolution of nursing will help prepare me for my future role as a nurse practitioner by assisting me in leadership and advocacy. As I learn and apply the knowledge I attain at Chamberlain, I will eventually feel more prepared to think critically and improve health outcomes from a master’s set level. Maybe one day, I will develop a theory through research, knowledge, and experience.

In week two, I valued learning about Carper’s Patterns of Knowing to classify nursing knowledge. Seeing how intuition wasn’t just something I relied on during my career was remarkable. One specific example of how I achieved this week’s objectives was understanding nursing meta paradigms and seeing nursing in different categories to define nursing topics. I thought this week’s discussion would be easy to answer as it related to my events and explained them through Carper’s knowledge patterns, but it was hard to reflect on my past negative experiences. Still, it was much needed to help me face them and understand that I used it as motivation to pursue my master’s in nursing. I am fired up to see how much difference I’ll be able to make as an FNP.

In week three, we learned about concept analysis. Concept analysis, in a nutshell, is further understanding and exploring an idea. This is most important in the developmental stage of nursing theories. I did not think the concept of quality of life would be so difficult. Still, as I began reading scholarly articles surrounding this concept and relating it to nursing theories, I realized that my perception of quality of life differs from another person’s subjective view. Peplau’s Interpersonal Relationship Theory helps nurses become aware of a process that leads to a successful perception of quality of life. I have much to comprehend about concept analysis and looking at other concepts and how they relate to nursing theory. Awareness of the subjectivity and broad definition of quality of life will help my practice.

In week four, we had to select a nursing, borrowed, or interdisciplinary theory to teach us how the approach could be used to improve or evaluate the quality of practice in our specific setting. I knew that theories develop from a thought, question, or idea. There are so many similarities between nursing and borrowed theories that sometimes it’s difficult to determine the origin of the concept or term. However, further examination of theory development helps us understand that each medical profession may focus on specific duties, but the general outcomes are relative regardless of the work.

While completing my discussion, I learned that the origin of Person-Centred Care Nursing (PCN) was borrowed from a term initially introduced by Carl Rogers, a psychologist, in his humanistic psychotherapy theory. It was adapted and referenced throughout other nursing theories but not tested until McCormack and McCance (2006) collaboratively synchronized their concepts into the PCN framework that now guides healthcare professionals for best practices in nursing. I found it interesting that McCormack and McCance had developed separate ideas that touched on person-centered care but were differentiated by the caring versus care process. While attempting to clarify the meaning of PCN, they set their framework as we see it now. Twenty-plus years later, PCN continues to evolve in theory.

In week five, we reviewed health behavior theories, family theory, and the praxis theory of suffering. We did an annotated bibliography, choosing a scholarly article about five views.

Similarly, the theories appeared to have influential gains for health promotion and satisfactory outcomes. For some views, locating an article within the past five years was hard. I find it so interesting that ideas I had thought of to influence health behavior had already been developed into theories and models. I find it fascinating to see how my mindset changed with age and time, and it validates my yearning to become a nurse practitioner and build upon nursing theories.

In week six, we covered culture and caring models. I chose Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring as it resonated most. Watson’s theory involves principles of caring, love, and kindness by being authentic (Butts & Rich, 2017). I became a nurse to care for others and help them with their healthcare needs, whether mentally, physically, or spiritually. This theory is essential in my professional practice and everyday practice for self-love.

While we must practice loving-kindness to others as nurses and future nurse practitioners, this theory can also reflect on us as healthcare professionals. Stress can influence practice negatively, affecting the patient-nurse relationship if one displays signs of frustration or angst. It becomes a never-ending cycle of stress and frustration if one does not integrate the caring model into practice.

In week seven, we learned how to apply nursing theory as a framework for evidence-based practice. Theory can be applied through various approaches. I decided to look at issues concerning the growing cases of chronic illness and the underutilization of preventative health. I reviewed Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory to identify that self-care is essential in increasing preventative health to improve health outcomes and reduce the risk of chronic illnesses.

In week eight, we presented our presentation. It was the first time I learned how to use Kaltura. I couldn’t turn off the camera and kept making many mistakes. It took an hour to record. I’ll need to work on this moving forward. We also reviewed our peer’s presentations. It was lovely to see how others incorporated the same theory and used it in their evidence-based practice for their medical concern in their specialty track. Overall, this was a very insightful introduction to nursing theories and applying them into practice as future NPs.
