NR-501 Week 7 Discussion-Nursing Theory Applied to Evidence-Based Practice

In NR500, I explored including mental health treatment among infertility patients. The psychological effects of long-term infertility and repeated unsuccessful treatments on patients are rarely discussed. The focus in this field is currently on technologies and treatments that can aid in conception. Still, when these treatments repeatedly do not work on an individual, hardly any support is available. According to a study by Mastroianni (2016), “Evidence shows that the psychological effects sustained by infertile individuals are similar to the effects on heart disease and cancer patients” (p. 156). I have chosen Watson’s Theory of Caring as a framework for this issue. Jean Watson’s human care theory aims at moving away from treatment-centeredness and focuses on “caring” (Ozan & Okumus, 2017, p. 96). In the study by Ozan & Okumus (2017) that discussed patients’ feelings of anxiety and distress upon repeatedly failed infertility treatments, the authors discovered that “when compared with the standard nursing care, the fact that the theory of caring caused a difference in the anxiety level is not medicine-focused but is based on the human, improvement and love” (p. 105). This is a field that I am personally vested in. While many treatment options and endless studies explore treating infertility, more attention must be paid to the psychological aspects of the diagnosis. It is all too easy today, “Let us just try again,” but factors such as mental fortitude and finances play huge barriers to infertility treatment. By factoring in Watson’s Theory of Caring, a provider can see that we cannot ask our patients what we are unable to do ourselves and, as a provider, if delivering the news of another failed infertility treatment is hard for the deliverer, imagine the feeling of the patient receiving the information. Watson’s theory gives humanity to the nursing profession and refocuses the care on the person and their emotions beyond the science and medicine of the diagnosis.
