According to Adams (2016), caring is the foundation upon which nursing practice principles and fundamentals are grounded. Thus, caring was proven integral and weaved through the nursing profession. Introduced by Florence Nightingale as the essence of nursing, caring has become one of the most significant fundamentals in nursing practice (Chitty, 1993). Nurses can employ an authentic practice that is meaningful and encompassing to patients and families through the art of caring. (Adams, 2016).

Definition of Caring
Caring is the act of love. I truly believe that caring is an innate characteristic of all nurses. Nurses demonstrate caring by looking after patients every day. Nurses care for people who cannot care for themselves, the sick, and the elderly. Caring is a fundamental human attribute. Thus, people demonstrate caring toward each other (Boykin & Dunphy, 2002). Nurses provide holistic care by addressing the physical, emotional, and intellectual aspects as well as the spiritual and social aspects. According to the World Health Organization (2007), healthcare in which patients, families, and communities are served and can participate in trusted health systems that respond to their needs through humane and holistic ways is the overall vision for patient-centered care.

Expression of Caring
In my artistic expression of caring, I chose to draw inside a heart, for I know that every little thing we do for our patients is with love. I emphasized holistic patient nursing care-centered. According to Kitson (2018), person-centered care is where the actions and interactions between the nurse and the patient maximize the patient’s independence and recovery, thus, keeping them safe and secure. Patient-centered health care system supports patients in making informed decisions on successfully managing their health and care (Health Foundation, 2015). I highlighted values I believe are highly necessary to provide holistic patient-centered care. We care for our patients by showing love, compassion, empathy, respect, and understanding. Caring integrates love and compassion. Nurses express unconditional altruism for the benefit of others without expecting in return. I also included the importance of justice and fairness. Justice and fairness are two crucial concepts implicit in caring, for everyone must be treated equitably and respectfully (Rachels, 2003).
The illustration highlights the importance of patient education and the family’s involvement. Patient education empowers our patients to participate in their healthcare. There will be an improvement in overall health outcomes through effective patient and family education.
Conclusion
Nursing is truly the gentle art of caring. Through time and into today’s practice, caring has remained the art and science of the nursing profession. (Adams, 2016).
