NR 447 Week 7 Discussion – Our Future Leaders

The leadership competency that Huston described in her article What skills will the nurse leaders of 2020 need?, that I want to focus on in this discussion is the better use of technology to connect people. In this article, Huston mentions, “Technology had driven so many changes already in health care, but knowledge and information acquisition and distribution was going to multiply exponentially” (Huston, pg. 14). My facility is in the midst of adopting the computer charting system EPIC. This new system, from what I have been taught so far, is supposed to utilize all of our current methods of charting in one system overall. EPIC, from what I have seen, allows nurses to chart in one section and have it cross over to multiple sections of the overall chart. For example, when scanning IV fluids or an antibiotic to administer, the computer system will calculate the milliliters from these meds and tally them into the I&O section of charting. Since this system is new and will have a GO date in July, since I am a relatively young and technologically savvy human being, when I am scheduled as being charge nurse for the day, it would be my responsibility to oversee the other nurses and make sure their charting is correct. It was also interesting to read the areas discussing robotics in the healthcare setting in the up and coming years. I know my facility is starting to utilize robotic surgery to enhance technology utilization. We also use TeleNeurology when we first acknowledge a patient with the onset of stroke symptoms to have timely outcomes for these patients by having a neurologist video chat with the patient who is struggling. The utilization of technology these days, as per Huston, is to “…supplement but not replace nursing care” (Huston, pg.14).

The BSN-prepared nurse can assist the nurse leader in budgeting by being mindful of items retrieved for patient care and carefully transacting them as appropriate. There are many other factors that contribute to reimbursement that enable budgeting. Finkelman states, “Healthcare purchasers, typically employers and governments, are in a very influential position because the purchaser makes the major decisions (e.g., approval of reimbursable services, provider choice, length of stay, length of treatment, cost and quality relationship)” (Finkelman, pg. 123). Healthcare facilities rely on reimbursements to provide payment for other aspects to keep the facility up and running efficiently. Other methods of aiding the budget that BSNprepared nurses can do are reducing the amount of overtime utilized during the work day. By appropriately charting and leaving on time, the amount of money distributed for that work period is reduced and allows more money to stay to accommodate other aspects of the floor in need of money allotment.
