NR 351 Week 8 Discussion – ACCN BSN Essentials and Your Future Practice

It is so important that when you are working, you are working with passion. Hood (2018, p.551) states, “When people perform with passion, they perceive the world as being full of opportunities, rather than obstacles, and they focus on personal abilities, rather than limitations. People who live out their life’s passions follow their hearts.” This statement is a very powerful one yet holds a lot of truth. I know that if I was a patient who required serious medical attention, I would want a nurse who has a lot of passion in her practice caring for me. I know that this nurse is going to be focused on helping me stay alive and achieve a safe and healed recovery. The AACN BSN Essential that I have chosen to focus on is Essential VIII, Professionalism and Professional Values. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2008, p. 26) defines professionalism as “The consistent demonstration of core values evidenced by nurses working with

other professionals to achieve optimal health and wellness outcomes in patients, families, and communities by wisely applying principles of altruism, excellence, caring, ethics, respect, communication, and accountability (Interprofessional Professionalism Measurement Group, 2008). I have chosen this essential because nurses who demonstrate professionalism in their practice are also working with passion. Nurses who demonstrate both professionalism and passion work for the greater good of their patients, and they want to see their patients achieve optimal health and wellness. Allari (2017, p.231) states, “Professional values are essential to nursing practice because they guide standards for working, provide a structure for evaluating behavior, and influence decisions making.” I know that when I am a working nurse, I will work with these qualities. My work ethic is very positive and focused. I will always do whatever I can to achieve the best results. My focus is on my patient and their families. And by working with a strong passion, I will advocate and strive for the wellness of my patient through patience, a caring heart, a positive attitude, accountability, safety, and respect. By exercising this essential in my practice, I know that my patient outcome goals will be set very high, and my patients and their family members will feel safe and comfortable in my hands. Working with professionalism will improve the quality of my future professional nursing career because, with more practice, my skills will get stronger. It will allow me to create a healing relationship with my patient.
