NR 351 Week 6 Discussion – Best Leaders

NR 351 Week 6 Discussion – Best Leaders

This week’s lesson is on system-based practice and leadership. It stated that “Although all managers should be leaders, not all leaders are managers.” During my final semester of nursing school, my professor emphasized this quote many times. Anyone can be a leader, but not everyone can be a manager. “Managers usually receive their title because of an appointment to a position within an organization”(Hood, 2018, pg 1154), while a leader is people who influence others. Even as new nurses, we can still be a leader even without an official position. A leader should be motivated, trustworthy, responsible, supportive, good at delegating, etc. To be a leader, you need your coworker’s trust and respect. If they do not respect you, they will question your leadership decisions and skills. Being a manager does not mean that you are a leader. A leader should lead and not just delegate tasks. They should be involved and help their coworkers out when in need of help. According to the Massachusetts Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies, a leader should be knowledgeable and have specific behaviors and skills. I believe the most important trait a leader should have is understanding the need to withstand, recover or grow in the face of stressors and changing demands (Massachusetts Department, 2016, pg 20). A leader must learn to adapt to any situation and still keep their leadership skills. During a tense situation, if everyone is panicking, the leader should be calm so they can delegate tasks efficiently and effectively. During my clinical experience at the ICU, I shadowed a nurse who happened to be the charge nurse for the day shift. She was fun and encouraging but also firm and responsible. In my eyes, she was a wonderful leader because she was not only a friend to her coworkers but also a supportive leader. When a situation arose, she took action and delegated each person to do something. And although I was only a student, she made sure I was also included. All her coworkers praised her and told me how fortunate I was to be able to learn under her. I agree with them and am so glad I had the experience of working with her. I aspire to be a leader that is supportive of their coworkers but also a friend to them as well.
