NR 351 Week 6 Assignment – Communication, Teamwork, and Collaboration

The best leader I have ever known was my paramedic partner while I was working as a new EMT two years ago. I had gotten my EMT license having had no prior medical experience; having my paramedic partner as a leader made me feel more confident in the medical field. My partner was a great leader because he had the ability to take control of emergency situations but was also capable of stepping back and allowing others to learn. In high-energy situations such as cardiac arrest, it can be intimidating to perform CPR and ensure that everyone is in the proper place, performing the proper roles. Our text states, “The ideas of mutuality, empowerment, and transformation as key elements of leadership surfaced in the late 1970s (Burns, 1978). These ideas comprise a feminine approach to leadership because they emphasize ‘power with’ rather than ‘power over,’ which is the more masculine approach toward the world” (Hood, 2018, p. 444).

I feel that this paramedic was a great leader because he exhibited the “power with,” ideal rather than “power over.” While he could have taken over compressions, though he had done them many times before, he allowed me to step in and perform this role. In doing this, I was able to gain valuable field experience and gain more confidence should I be in this situation in the future. Our text also states, “Leaders learn from challenging assignments, education, significant people, hardship, and other unidentified situations” (Hood, 2018, p. 449). I truly feel that by being placed in this scenario, I was more prepared and more confident for future cardiac arrest situations and was able to lead newer EMTs on the squad as well. I never felt uncomfortable working with this leader and always felt I was welcome to ask questions or request clarifications.

Rather than dominating the less experienced EMTs and being the ring leader, my partner treated us as equals, and empowerment was the main goal of his leadership. This leader made going to work exciting and caused the squad members to have more eagerness to learn and become better health professionals. As a result of his leadership, I feel more confident assisting others who are less experienced and feel more comfortable teaching skills. My partner definitely exhibited transformational leadership in that he recognized the common goal amongst the group and inspired the whole group to be focused on reaching that goal (Sherwood & Barnsteiner, (2017). He was also a “Be-know-do” (Hood, 2018, p. 445) leader in that he stressed the purpose and value of what the group was working towards, motivated the group, and displayed a sense of trust and confidence (Hood, 2018).
