NR 351 Week 4 Scholarly Paper – Phase 1 (Three Good Things)

The main meaning of this article is to prioritize your feelings and emotions while working within your field of practice. The article expresses a concern that employees focus more on negative events that happen within the workplace versus focusing on positive events that occur. According to Roberts ( 2018), “Negative emotions and events are more powerful than positive ones and are constantly vying for our attention”(p. 26). The article emphasizes the need for everyone to voice or write down three pleasant things that occurred during each working shift. By doing so, employees will experience less burnout, the patient’s outcomes will improve, and there will be less turnover. As stated by Roberts (2018),” Researchers have demonstrated that positive reflection can reduce burnout, build resilience, and improve the well-being of individual participants” (p. 26).

The article also expresses ways to incorporate the Three Good Things concept in the working field. An example of incorporating the Three Good Things is by implementing the concept within a meeting to encourage engagement and positivity (Roberts, 2018). Another example is having staff share three good things before leaving the shift each night he or she works, promoting cheerful conversation rather than stressful communication (Roberts, 2018).

Impact of Assigned Article Content on Future Practice

I believe the content of this article will aid me tremendously while working in the Emergency Room. I have only worked in the Emergency Room for a year now, and I can legitimately say I have had more negative comments come out of my mouth versus positive statements on the days I work. This article has shown me that focusing on the negative aspects of my job, as much as I have, is part of the reason why I am contemplating changing departments. My goal after reading this article is to start focusing more on the positive things I have seen and performed and express those positive things to my colleagues. Doing so, I believe it, will help improve the positivity between me and my coworker. I also hope to see a positive change occur within me that involves less stress while at work and at home.
