Navigating the Dissertation Journey- Anticipations, Excitements, and Challenges

A dissertation is a form of academic writing that informs learners about the basics of research. It fosters scientific writing and advocates for the application of critical thinking skills to the student. It is mainly done towards the completion of a degree to represent an original idea in the field of study. A dissertation demonstrates the competency gained by the student in the concerned field by showing the ability of the student to conduct unassisted research, collect relevant data, analyze the data collected, and make conclusions (Sahay et al., 2022).

To write a dissertation, one has to be a creative thinker and identify an issue from their personal experiences that needs to be addressed. One must also have excellent skills in processing huge amounts of data, be conversant with data analysis techniques, be able to generate rational arguments, and, finally, be a good organizer to arrange information in a logical and organized manner (Sahay et al., 2022). The dissertation writing process requires the student to complete seven stages of research writing. These stages are under close supervision of the mentor who guides the student’s protégé as stated below. To begin with, the first step is gathering information to help come up with a pertinent research question. Secondly, the student reads about the research from the available materials. Thirdly, they select the research design and identify participants. In addition, they do a comprehensive data analysis of the findings, which precedes the next step of making fine corrections to the paper. Lastly, they publicize the paper in a journal (Sahay et al., 2022).

Dissertation writing is a process that has both motivating and demotivating factors. The exciting aspects include finding solutions to critical issues and playing a role in policy formulation by providing influential insights. Also, the multidisciplinary collaboration among team members may be an exciting opportunity. However, as noted by Sükan and Mohammadzadeh (2022), navigating through ethical dilemmas, determining the reliability and validity of data, and technological complexities are among the main challenges that are expected to be encountered.
