Navigating Ethical Terrain: Universal vs. Situational Ethics in Global Management
Are ethics universal or situational?
Ethics are universal, which implies that right or wrong applies to all. This assumption is based on natural law, as all human beings can distinguish right from wrong. The interpretation of actions is not determined or dictated by personal feelings or opinions. Actions are either right or wrong. For instance, environmental pollution is wrong regardless of the nation, as the negative effects affect every country. Companies that bribe officials to continually emit pollutants are unethical despite the benefits of their products or services to humanity.
How does a global manager navigate this terrain? Provide insights and give examples.
A global manager is faced with the challenge of cultural aspects that may make some activities appear wrong or right in different contexts. However, ethics remain universal in business since the natural law does not respect religion, culture, geographical area, abilities, and other unique aspects. For instance, the SS United States was a renowned vessel that required refurbishing in the 1990s. This process necessitated the removal of asbestos, which could not be done in the USA. The service was outsourced to Turkey, where it would cost less ($2 million instead of $100 million) than in the USA. The removal of asbestos posed carcinogenic threats to workers, causing the process to be carried out in Sevastopol, a Russian port, for a lower price (Ast, 2018). This situation may appear like a cost-cutting venture for unethical managers. However, it is unethical due to the exposure of workers to health hazards. Thus, managers ought to retain the ethical balance without emphasizing the possibility of change within regions. Natural law is constant.
