Nature of Nursing and Nursing Concepts
The unique purpose of nursing that is not performed by any other profession is caring. Carative care is something that nurses are often dedicated to performing. According to Pajnkihar, Štiglic, and Vrbnjak (2017), caring is considered the core concept in nursing that includes caring for as well as caring about clients. The former involves holistic nursing linked to professional expertise and knowledge, whereas the latter involves spiritual and psychological consideration of patients. Through caring, patients are able to experience feelings of hospitality and comfort as well as those of being healed and at ease. Caring helps improve patients’ well-being and satisfaction and also increases the quality of care. Whereas other professionals also interact with clients, the daily interaction between nurses and patients goes beyond their practical and medical roles.
The concept of caring has been backed by Jean Watson’s theory of human caring. This theory tends to focus more on the spiritual as opposed to the physical aspect of clients (Nikfarid et al., 2018). Through caring, a nurse is able to employ an authentic and genuine practice that is meaningful and encompassing for the patient and the families involved. Watson’s theory claims that caring reflects a high regard for patients as human beings and reflects the importance of treating them with utmost dignity and respect (Adams, 2016). The nurse’s role reflects an inner connectedness, genuineness, and presence inherent in nursing (a profession that involves a lot of giving). Caring is considered a necessity in the manner in which nurses assist their patients on the continuum of illness through to wellness. In fact, caring is sometimes considered synonymous with nursing. It is this concept of continued caring for patients that makes the nursing profession unique, and that is highly emphasized in Jean Watson’s theory of human caring.
