My Personal Teaching Experience and The Concept of Cooperative Learning

My Personal Teaching Experience and The Concept of Cooperative Learning

My desire to be a teacher began when I was a little girl. I grew up with much love for children. In my first job, I worked at a daycare. While working there, I loved interacting with children and seeing them learn new ideas and things they did not know every time. Therefore, cooperative learning is the one important and helpful concept in the chapter that would influence my journey as a teacher. Cooperative learning is a learner-centred teaching strategy that allows learners to work together to achieve shared learning goals. Such a sense of interdependence inspires learners to work in groups to support and help each other (Kauchak & Eggen, 2015). The concept of cooperative learning will help me in my teaching journey in the future because it will allow me to interact with the learners effectively and meet their individual needs. The different types of cooperative learning methods include Jigsaw II, which I could implement to assist my learners in better understanding a subject or topic. I realized that when learners work cooperatively in groups, primarily through the Jigsaw II methods of cooperative learning, they listen to what their classmates say, receive and give help, resolve their issues democratically, and reconcile their problems.

In addition, this concept of cooperative learning impressed me the most because I believe in student-centred learning. By allowing learners to learn independently, I will be able to identify their strengths, weaknesses, and abilities and support them effectively in the areas where they are experiencing difficulties. Besides, Kauchak & Eggen (2015) affirm that cooperative learning has numerous benefits. It increases learners’ achievement, improves their interpersonal and problem-solving skills, increases motivation, increases engagement in class, and boosts their success. Thus, with the various advantages of cooperative learning, I was very touched by this concept because it will be an essential tool for me in the future in ensuring my class is lively and active and all learners are engaged. Notably, cooperative learning primarily encourages learners to learn independently in groups. Through these groups, as a teacher, I will be able to interact with individual learners face-to-face and impact each of them prudently.
