Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
Multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) is an arranged systematic framework used to offer evidence-based practices to support learners in achieving vital results for every learner. Its primary goal is to improve the results or outcomes for learners.
MTSS has three tiers: Tier 1, 2, and 3. Tier 1 entails the universal or general support of all learners at all levels with a general expectation to address their wants. The specifics of this tier include universal support and explicit and differentiated teaching for all learners. Teachers should periodically screen and evaluate learners: interventions are often at a whole-school level and are given to all learners across behavioral, emotional, and academic dimensions of training. In addition, teachers need to use research-based instruction appropriately to support all learners (Teachings in Education 0:34).
Tier 2 as secondary intervention entails supporting a specified target group of learners who show a specific problematic behavior that is common among students and must be addressed (Teachings in Education 1:20). The specifics are teachers should reinforce concepts by aiming to supplement, not replace instruction. Another specific is careful monitoring of tier 2 instruction.
Tier 3 involves tackling an issue individually and addressing it on a specific individual who has exhibited undesired behavior. Schools must also find intensity and time to help those in need (Teachings in Education 2:37). At this stage, learners might need intensive intervention level of help that entails highly individualized learning goals to support tailored education programs.
Tier 1 is the most important for providing support to all learners. This is because tier one entails explicit and differentiated teaching for all learners or school-wide intervention, often the vital foundation for problem-based learning (PBL) (Pullen 79). Therefore, tier 1 is the best because interventions at this level are done at the whole-school level and are offered to all learners across emotional, behavioral, and academic learning dimensions.
