The role play Maria and Lizzie typifies bad practices in therapeutic relationships. After interacting with the social worker, I would be distressed and confused. Effective therapeutic communication is key in therapeutic communication (Mersha et al., 2023). In the case presented, the social worker demonstrates several poor communication practices. To begin with, she arrives late to the session and does not greet the client appropriately. She also lacks empathy, as shown by how she delivers information on her failure to call the client’s mother and transfer to another foster placement. She seems absent and inattentive, as she refers to her phone in the middle of the session. She is also in a hurry, even walking out of the interview without concluding the session effectively. Non-therapeutic techniques such as overloading are also evident in the interview. The social worker asks many questions at a time and does not give the client sufficient time to respond to them.
The therapist in the second role-play demonstrates several attributes that Maria did not. The therapist begins the session with an introduction and greetings before asking the reason for the presentation. This helped in establishing a good rapport. The therapist also takes notes during the interview. Note-taking is a good therapeutic technique that helps assure the client that they are being listened to (Ameworwor et al., 2024). He also puts the client at ease by explaining processes to them. He also demonstrates active listening and employs non-verbal techniques such as nodding. Likewise, the therapist responds empathetically to the client and employs the seeking clarification technique to get the client to gain further insight into their complaints. The therapist also affirms help-seeking to the client. These practices will likely enhance the client’s participation in the care process.
