This first assignment will focus on students selecting their project (may think of yourself as the energy analyst or consultant for the project you select). An energy consultant is often contracted by homeowners and businesses to help provide an independent evaluation of energy use (students will not have time to complete this for this assignment). When we understand energy usage, we can begin to identify problems that elevate usage and build an improvement plan to better manage energy demands. Students will be asked to do this for their selected project similarly. For Assignment Series 1, students must select a project for which they have specific knowledge and access to energy use information (i.e. your home or apartment, employer, volunteer organization, etc.). In Assignment Series 2 students will conduct a mini-energy audit or assessment for this project. Then in Assignment Series 3 students will evaluate the mini-energy audit or assessment to identify areas of wasted or inefficient energy usage, as well as prepare a plan to apply best practices from the weekly lessons to improve energy and environmental performance for the project.

For this first submission, students need to write a 200-word (minimum) original post identifying what project they will select. Be sure to clearly explain the rationale for this selection. Then students need to provide a baseline of initial energy usage for their selected project. Typically every energy audit or assessment requires some kind of information regarding electric usage and cost. Students must select a project that they can confirm here in this original post what the current electric usage and cost is for their project (must include these actual amounts with a short history, i.e. past year). Ideally, students should select a project with one electric bill to reduce the scope of what they can manage during this class. Try not to select something too big (i.e. a 100,000 sq. ft. office building) as that will overwhelm you for this project. Also, make sure the electric bill information collected clearly supports the project selected (i.e. clearly understand what is or is not included in that electric bill as this is often one of the first issues in these evaluations). Some students may have done some initial energy audits before; it is fine to reuse some of that data, just get to the current date and understand you will be further evaluating that energy usage and applying the best practices from this course content to the project.
