Case 14-37 Bonnie Bruised Page 477

My selected case is Case 14–37. This case involves Bonnie Bruised, a student, and Professor Disclose, an instructor. Bonnie Bruised discloses to Professor Disclose a personal issue involving threats to her life from her boyfriend, her experiences of physical violence, and his stalking her. I chose this case study vignette because it clearly highlights how ethical dilemmas involving the risk of breaching confidentiality and privacy arise in various encounters. Bonnie Bruised is unwilling to report her case of an intimate partner’s violence to the right authorities, and Professor Disclose has to decide, based on her duty to protect her students, to report the case to the authority as well as protect her student’s confidentiality. From a personal perspective, this case helps me understand how, as a psychotherapist, I will be exposed to cases that create complex ethical conflicts in which I will be forced to strike a balance between ethical principles or respecting a client’s autonomy and confidentiality and what must be done for the benefit of the patient regardless of their views on a certain issue. I believe this case will help me explore how to employ various aspects of professionalism to manage such ethical conflicts.

The central ethical conflict in this particular case vignette is whether Professor Disclose reports the case and breaches her student’s confidentiality as per the reporting obligation under Title IX or she protects her student’s confidentiality and respects the refusal to interact with these support resources. Balancing the ethical principles of beneficence and autonomy can guide ethical decision-making (Warner, 2022). Additionally, a clear understanding and application of the principle of beneficence can improve the well-being and health outcomes of a patient as well as respect and maintain their dignity (Cheraghi et al., 2023).

PROMPT: The Final Project for this course is the creation of a case study analysis. Review the Final Project Guidelines and Rubric PDF document, paying particular attention to the Prompt section (which is a detailed list of requirements for your final project), as well as the Milestone section (which provides an overview of each of the milestones in this course). Although the milestones support your successful completion of the final project, note that these assignments are not full drafts of the elements in the final project prompt, so although you will be working on different skills and aspects of your final project during the term, you will need to complete all elements of your case study analysis for submission in Module Nine.
