As a black woman living in America, micro-aggressions are nothing new to me. I have had numerous encounters with microaggression over the years, from getting suspicious looks while shopping or odd questions about my hair. However, for this assignment, I experienced microaggression through interaction with one of my classmates. I happened to meet this charming guy over the summer; his name was Mbappe. His parents had immigrated to the USA from Cameroon while he was still a child. I had a crush on him, and we did have a lot of fun that summer. I was excited to tell my friends about it when I got back to school.

While in the middle of narrating my story to my friends, one of my classmates, Jenny, decided to join us, and I just continued with my story excitedly. “Am sorry, what was his name again?” Jenny interrupted, “Oh, it’s Mbappe; his ethnicity is Cameroonian,” I replied. Before I could say anything else, Jenny uttered words that were not even close to what I had said and said, “How do you even spell that?”. Something about her statement did not sit right with me, and we all exchanged looks. Monica, one of my friends, then pointed out to Jenny that she was being rude and aggressive. “You have no problem mentioning the complicated Russian names of models who inspire your outfits, but you have a problem with Mbappe? I think that is a problem”, Monica said. We all sat there and looked at her as she realized that she had a prejudice towards some names, in this case, African names. It was evident to us all that she did not know of this till we pointed it out, and for that, we easily moved past the point as soon as she apologized.
