Mental Health Services- Marriage and Family Therapist

Marriage and family therapists, otherwise identified as family therapists or counselors, are among the mental health professionals. In most cases, they deal with clients suffering from severe familial conflicts, which can be demanding and stressful.  They help increase understanding between family members to promote communication and eradicate issues like marital stress, drug abuse, and alcohol. They also encourage clients to reveal and express their experiences and emotions, manage their reactions, and tune to such difficulties as layoffs and divorce; guide clients through the decision-making process regarding their future; and improve communication between couples (Arumugam, 2020). Marriage counselors give confidence and inspire both partners to concentrate on self-awareness and self-improvement. Treatment could range from 12 to 50 sessions and normally incorporates individual and family therapy.

Additionally, these therapists normally work at government departments, mental health centers, substance abuse centers, hospitals, and postsecondary institutions (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021). Some therapists normally travel to the homes of their patients to administer treatment. Currently, online marriage counseling has become ideal for most couples, given its time-saving, convenience, and effective manner.

Subsequently, these therapists need to possess a master’s degree together with a license to practice. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (2021), the basic educational requirements for a marriage counselor include a marriage and family therapist degree obtained at the master’s level. Additionally, this degree is in any field that is related to marriage and family therapy, such as clinical social work, psychology, or psychiatry, among others. It is also important to have two years of supervised clinical field experience. Also, one needs to pass scores on a state-approved written exam to become a licensed marriage or family counselor or therapist.

Question

Mental health services are an important and specialized area that is experiencing a serious problem in the U.S. healthcare system. A major problem in gaining support for the care and treatment of people with mental illness is that the diagnosis, treatment, and cure are not as precise, certain, and assured as other types of illness. Treatment of mental illness consists of helping patients live with their condition and cannot promise a cure.
