Memory Exercise- Remembering the Words

The exercise was simple as it took less than five minutes to complete. Out of approximately twenty-five words, I remembered nineteen of them. Some were difficult to remember because I could not classify them into a category that I used to remember the words. For example, there was an animal category, which included a horse, a bird, a cat and a baby; the second category was tools which included key, hammer, bell, and sword, and a fruit category, which included kiwi and apple, and the number category which was only nine. I was able to remember those I could link together. For instance, when I remembered a word like a key, I connected it to house which was part of the words. The same case applied to green which I connected to tea. However, some words were difficult to remember like fire and guitar, I forgot about them, and it was until the test was complete, and when I was going through the original list, I remembered them.

It was difficult to recall every word on the list because it was a short-term memory, and the duration of holding a short-term memory is estimated to be but a few seconds (Manoochehri, 2021). Secondly, short-term memory has a limited capacity, and only about seven to nine items can be stored at a time (Manoochehri, 2021); hence, I used categories because I could not store many individual things in my short-term memory. With only a few seconds and such a limited capacity for the number of things I can remember, this explains why I often forget things that have just been recited to me, like a phone number, directions or things to buy when I go to the grocery store.
