Subject: Our statement on the Jessica Krug scandal

About the above subject, it is unfortunate that the whole issue is directly linked to our press company because it is this company that has published her books and other academic works. However, we cannot be held liable for all deception about her identity because our work is not to speculate on authors’ identities but to help publish the works they bring to us. Therefore, we do not owe the provost a lot of explanation about the issue. Still, since we are in the mix of the whole thing, we should give our statement to the provost and the general public to protect the company’s reputation.

The first action we should take as a press company publishing Krug’s works is to edit her profiles in her digital literature material. We should edit her background information by replacing her true background information to stop misleading readers who may be interested in understanding her background. It is unlawful to delete her works, as people suggest because we have no legal base. There is no problem for an individual from a different background to research different cultures since this happens many times. Krug’s only mistake was to use identity deception to benefit from scholarships and other academic benefits meant for people of African and Latin origin.

We may take the only action to verify the content in all of her works to ascertain whether it is true or false. However, I’m certain that the content is accurate and truthful since she co-authored several books and other works with other known authors. Therefore, as a press that published her works, there is little we can do regarding the scandal since there are no academic mistakes she has committed. Therefore, the whole issue and action lie at the discretion of George Washington University.

Jessica Krug was a professor at GW who had claimed a black, Afro-Caribbean identity that was false. She has resigned as a professor at GW. We discussed the ethical implications for Duke University Press, in terms of what steps might be taken regarding Krug’s book.

• Your university press is a mid-sized press in the Pacific Northwest. You publish a prestigious series and other books on Native American studies and are one of the leaders in this field.
• A number of your titles have won awards, and one that has won several awards has recently had a controversy with the author, who claimed to be an enrolled member of a Native American tribe but who it has now been discovered is not Native American by ancestry. The professor–from another university–has resigned but claims that the issue does not affect his/her scholarship or the findings of the book.
• You are the editor-in-chief of the press and have been asked to respond to this issue; the editor who acquired the book and the author retired a few years ago.
• Write a memo to your boss, the Director of the Press, outlining your best course of action as a press.
