Medical Situation – Access to Mental Healthcare

Medical Situation – Access to Mental Healthcare

Access to mental healthcare still presents a challenge to many communities. Care groups’ efforts to improve access have increased recognition of these illnesses. They have, however, not been sufficient in combating this problem. Hire our assignment writing services if your assignment is devastating you.

Nursing Situation

During my rotation in the psychiatric unit, I encountered a 30-year-old African American male with depressive symptoms. While engaging him, he mentioned that he was diagnosed with depression during his college years. He also noted that his father refuted the diagnosis. His father claims that his troubles are due to sorcery and that he should ‘man up’ and face them.

The Problem

The case presents a patient-centered manifestation of knowledge inadequacy on mental health illnesses. The patient’s father attributes his presentations to sorcery.

Background

The case reveals gaps in knowledge on mental health illnesses among certain communities. Cultural aspects come into play in this regard. As Kiselev et al. (2020) note, cultural diversification in the understanding and definition of illnesses.

Scope of the Problem

Many people do not have adequate knowledge of mental health illnesses. Tesfaye et al. (2021) report that the prevalence of people with poor knowledge of these illnesses is over 55%. Birkie & Anbesaw (2021) also report that over 70% of people with these illnesses do not receive treatment for these illnesses, principally because of a lack of knowledge of these illnesses.

Consequences

The problem costs the global economy up to 1 trillion dollars (Doran & Kinchin, 2019). At the societal level, it causes suffering and disabilities to the affected individuals. Not addressing the issue may compound the effects of the disease.

Knowledge Gaps and Proposed Solutions

There exists a gap in how to enhance communities’ knowledge of mental health illnesses (Qin & Hsieh, 2020). Health promotion campaigns targeting ethnic minority groups may enhance these communities’ knowledge of these illnesses.

Research Question

Do culture-specific community awareness campaigns targeting ethnic minority groups enhance communities’ knowledge of mental health illnesses?

Final Considerations

The proposed study is a reflection of commitment, communication, and cultural provisions postulated by Simeone Roach. It represents commitment as it is targeted at lessening the impact of mental health illnesses, culture because it appreciates the existence of the problem in culturally diverse groups and communication as it seeks to utilize a culturally tailored approach.

Question

Create a mental health or medical situation.

Nursing is concerned with the “provision of a caring relationship that facilitates health and healing’” while attending to “the range of human experiences and responses to health and illness within the physical and social environments” (Social Policy Statement, 2010, p. 9). Consequently, nursing focuses on the human response, that is, “the responses of individuals to actual and potential health problems” (Social Policy Statement, 2010, p. 10). As defined, “human responses include any observable need, concern, condition, event, or fact of interest to nurses that may be a target of evidence-based nursing practice” (Social Policy Statement, 2010, p. 10).

Identification of nursing research problems occurs during the experience of nursing situations. For this paper, you will describe a research problem that arises from your nursing situation. The research problem might be but is not limited to a) factors contributing to the situation, b) the need to understand how patients experience the situation, or c) interventions that can help/improve the situation or patient outcomes.

The one to three-page paper is outlined as follows (please use these headings):

  1. Introduction: A short introduction describing the paper’s main topic (3-4 sentences).
  2. Nursing Situation: One paragraph description summary of the nursing situation (5-6 sentences). You will describe a nursing situation from your clinical experience in which a clinical problem is identified. Nursing situations happen during the encounter of the nurse with the one nursed. Therefore, you must describe a situation that happened while YOU were providing professional care to a patient. Because you (as a nurse) are involved, the nursing situation is written in the first person (e.g., I met Mr. L….; I took the time to talk with Ms. G….).
  3. The problem/issue: What is wrong with the current situation that can be addressed by conducting a research study? The problem must be patient-centered and relevant to nursing. Organizational, administrative, nurse-related, or medical issues are unacceptable for this assignment.
  4. Background: What is the nature of the problem, or the context of the situation, that readers need to understand?
  5. Scope of the problem: How big is the problem? How many people are affected?
  6. Consequences of the problem: What are the economic implications? What is the impact of the problem on population health? What will happen if we don’t address the issue?
  7. Knowledge gaps and proposed solutions: What information about the problem is lacking? How will the new study contribute to solving the problem?
  8. Research question: Indicate a research question that arises as you consider the literature related to the problem/issue and its significance. A research question pinpoints what you want to find out in your research study. In other words, a research question will be answered through research and not by searching textbooks. Questions end in a question mark.
  9. Final considerations: Specify how your proposed study reflects at least three attributes of the caring construct. Draw upon at least 3 Roach’s C’s of Caring or Mayeroff’s Caring ingredients as resources for the construct of caring.
