Media and Crime: Forbidding Young Children to View Films with Violent Content

I firmly believe that young children should not be exposed to films with violent content due to the potential negative impact on their development. Exposure to violent media content can make children more aggressive, insensitive to violence, and fearful or anxiously perceptive of the world around them (Miedzobrodzka et al., 2021). At an impressionable age, children are still developing mechanisms for differentiating the realms of real and fiction, and violent media mess them up. As a result, they might mimic violent behaviors or develop a distorted view of acceptable ways to resolve conflict: Media and Crime: Forbidding Young Children to View Films with Violent Content.

Violent content programs should be protected from children not only to prevent violent behavior in children but also to maintain the proper emotional and cognitive state. Children exposed to violent scenes in the media may lack sympathy or cannot observe the effects of wrongdoing (Swider-Cios et al., 2023).

This kind of desensitization to violence may lead to apathy when confronted with screen real-life pain or conflict. As some others might state, encountering violent imagery might help teach the ability to cope with adversity. However, conflict-solving or problem-solving skills should come from positive, constructive examples, not violent imagery.

In conclusion, our role as adults is to steer children toward appropriate content to meet the milestones they should achieve. I prefer media that encourages creativity, kindness, and problem-solving skills. Such content can condition children to reason correctly and act kindly to benefit positively to society.

It is impossible to completely guard children against any violent imaging as they grow and mature. Still, a healthy foundation of requisite knowledge and values can be provided, enabling young people to address such imagery when they are developmentally ready adequately. Guidance and understanding shape children’s future paths.
