Manifest Destiny and the Mexican War of 1846

Which of your two selections do you consider most impactful on Westward Expansion during 1800-1848? Explain why.

The nineteenth-century Westward expansion was the movement of settlers to the West. It all started with the Louisiana Purchase, fueled by the belief in Manifest Destiny, the Oregon Trail, and the California Gold Rush (Woodworth, 2010).

The California Gold Rush of 1848-1855 began after gold was discovered in Sutter’s Mill by James Marshall. The discovery resulted in close to 300,000 people moving to California. People came from other parts of America and the world. The gold brought a sudden influx into the country’s money supply, resulting in California’s fast growth and rapid rise to become an independent State in the Compromise of 1850. On the other hand, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which took place between 1803 and 1806 and was referred to as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, purposed to cross the newly acquired land following the Louisiana Purchase (OpenStax, 2019).

I believe that the expedition was most impactful on Westward Expansion during 1800-1848 because it covered a wider area than the one covered by the California gold rush. This is because the expedition documented plants and natural resources that the European Americans were unaware existed, though the indigenous people were aware of the existence of these resources. Also, the pair was the first American to cross the Continental Divide. They were also the first to reach Montana, see Yellowstone, and give a documented official expedition description. Lewis and Clark’s visit to the Pacific Northwest, the maps they drew, and the sovereignty proclamations they made using flags and medals were the necessary legal steps that they used in claiming title to the indigenous land under the Doctrine of Discovery (Woodger  & Toropov, 2014).

Analyze the effects of the ideology of Manifest Destiny on the two historical events you chose from the list.

The California Manifest provided new hope for expanding the Manifest Destiny idea. The Gold Rush attracted thousands of people within and without American borders. The Gold Rush offered the possibility of realizing their dream of moving to the West and making a claim on their land while seeking and finding gold. The dream was actualized when some who followed Manifest Destiny moved west to start a new life. As regards the Lewis and Clark expedition, exploring the frontier furthered the Manifest Destiny ideology as Americans believed it was their divine appointment to take over more land as their own.
