As a job seeker, it is easier to get information about the potential employer and job details from social media. For instance, it is now easier for job seekers to search for job opportunities on LinkedIn using keywords, read the job position descriptions, know the salaries offered, and even save the job opportunities to a favorite list for later use (Dessler, 2020). The job seeker can also share the opportunity with others without physically meeting them. However, this increases competitiveness since platforms like LinkedIn are frequently used by many candidates (Holm, 2010). Another challenge is that it can be hard to distinguish between legitimate job postings and fraudulent postings, as others may use the platform for fraudulent reasons.
Lastly, employers may face the drawback of not reaching the minority and senior citizens group of potential employees. This is because minorities and senior citizens are less likely to be online (Dessler, 2020). Employers may also end up with many resumes from the flooded applications, making it hard to filter the desired candidates (Dessler, 2020). Therefore, employers can use self-screening job duties in detail so that candidates who are not interested need not apply (Dessler, 2020). Dessler (2020) adds that employers can also use an online prescreening questionnaire to identify qualified candidates. Alternatively, an applicant tracking system can help manage myriads of applications, screening, gathering, and attracting the right candidates.
