Managerial Decision-Making Process in an Organization
Security training personnel exercise within the airport
Some managerial decisions are made because of unexpected problems arising within an organization (Kochhar, 2018). The recent decision to start a security personnel training exercise within the airport came about after customers complained of losing some of their luggage in the security check and screening department. I found it frustrating that one of the outsourced security officers captured on CCTV cameras stole a passenger’s mobile phone in the process of screening the luggage. Changes are mandatory in the whole security department to solve the problem of insecurity. Managerial decision-making processes are necessary when making decisions.
Use of the processes explained in Chapter 2 of the textbook in decision-making
Recognize that a decision needs to be made: Managers should acknowledge that the problem has happened and action has to be taken. It is evident enough that one of the outsourced officers stole a client’s mobile phone with my case. Information from the CCTV cameras and other staff members working in the luggage screening room is enough to affect the officer who messed up our customers.
Generation and analysis of multiple alternatives: The alternatives available to solve the insecurity problem include; warning the officer, firing all outsourced security personnel, and training our security personnel to replace the outsourced officers. Warning the officer and allowing him to continue with his job is not a good alternative to solve the problem. There are high chance of the officer repeating the same mistake as stealing might be his character. It will be emotional to fire the officer, but that will be the best short-term solution. Firing all outsourced officers is not a good decision. Emotional intelligence in solving the problem should apply. There is a need to understand that an individual messed up and not the entire outsourced team.
Selection and implementation of the best alternative: The best decision to solve the problem is to train our security personnel. Introducing our officers will require hiring experts to train security officers, and here, we need to make another decision before hiring training experts. During the training process, we can monitor the characters of trainees so that we can know whom to hire. We shall slowly replace them with the outsourced officers once their contracts expire.
Conclusion
Decisions made by managers play a vital role in the performance of an organization. Managers should research and evaluate the available alternatives for solving problems when they arise in an organization before making the final decisions (Kochhar, 2018). A good decision enables an organization to thrive and survive long-term, while a poor decision can lead an organization to bankruptcy (Rice University, 2019). Managers should gather much information before making decisions because quick reactions can lead to missed opportunities and bad decisions that are harmful to the organization.
