I recall an afternoon when I encountered a heated argument between my colleagues at the workplace. The atmosphere was threatening. Things seemed to worsen at any moment based on their exchange of words. For several minutes, I hesitated to confront them, eavesdropping on the nature of the argument: Making Moral Decisions.

However, as soon as one of them raised their hand to hit the other, I approached them, trying to calm the situation. Still, the anger in their facial expressions scared me. I understood that conflict cannot be a remedy for any argument.

Hence, there was a need to end the confrontation and encourage my colleagues to apply more effective strategies, such as negotiation, to address their disputes. My interruption elicited mixed reactions since the two were now against me. Eventually, they cooled down, and with my advice, the situation was resolved peacefully.

My understanding of the effects of conflict, especially in the workplace, influenced my initiative to confront and settle the dispute that provoked the heated argument. Conflict is a catalyst for broken relationships, decreased productivity, and reduced morale (Appelbaum et al., 2022). I believed that peace and unity cannot be achieved through conflicts.

Conflicts at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, necessitating a need to cultivate a more friendly working environment and incorporate better dispute management strategies. A past encounter where a friend was hospitalized due to such a confrontation triggered my response in settling the argument.

I advocate for embracing effective strategies, such as negotiation or mediation, to settle differences rather than confront each other with bitterness, which cultivates rivalry and enmity, unethical practices in life encounters. Negotiation prompts individuals to engage in civilized communication to assess the root cause of a dispute and identify effective intervention measures.
