Although Seat Pleasant has major health issues, it has many community assets and resources on which effective strategies to combat its high obesity rate could be based. The Seat Pleasant Activity Center is one of the leading community resources that may be leveraged in health promotion activities. It is an ideal facility to house exercises, nutrition classes, and health programs targeting various age groups and abilities. As the Prince George’s County Health Department (2023) noted, community-based interventions are needed to eliminate health disparities in the County. Apart from this, Goodwin Park offers an open area for recreation, which can be further enhanced by making active lifestyle choices available to its residents.

Subsequently, faith-based institutions, specifically the line of churches on Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, are potential community partners. These facilities often have effective contact with inhabitants who reside within the communities and could be used as non-threatening places for health promotion initiatives and community outreach. According to the Maryland Department of Health (2023), community partnerships are a significant part of creating lasting changes in health and are required to overcome key structural barriers to healthy living.

Following this, as limited as it may be within city boundaries, healthcare infrastructure includes a number of primary care physicians who could be involved in the fight against obesity. Access to specialized medical interventions through professional health partnerships via the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center complements this (Prince George’s County Health Department, 2023). Such medical resources could be integrated into a comprehensive obesity management program. Such access to healthy food and medical transportation could include utilization of local transportation systems, such as Metro bus lines. While the city presently faces difficulties regarding being a food desert, small grocers and local food establishments could already be engaged in the development to improve access to healthy food, an activity identified by the Maryland Department of Health (2023) as a major social determinant of health for the community.
