Living A Holistic Life and Dimensions of Wellness

Living a holistic life without stress and other negative social externalities helps optimize individuals’ wellness. Living a holistic life depends on individuals’ healthy choices for the body, mind, and time to evaluate the ideal thinking that enhances access to the very welfare needs. A holistic life begins with one’s thinking, allowing the right mind processes and sustaining balanced emotions. The positive outcomes of living a holistic life are improved physical and mental health devoid of depression and stress and overall relief of chronic pain that adversely affects individual welfare. Eliopoulos’ guide to living a balanced life identifies nutrition, social aspects, environment, and emotional balance as the key items one should have (Eliopoulos, 2010). The author asserts that living a holistic life requires individuals to balance social, emotional, and physical aspects to ensure that the mind, the body, and the soul are all taken care of. Given the eight dimensions of wellness from Paxton Patterson’s video, a personal assessment reveals that I am weak in emotional and occupational aspects, while my strength lies in the environmental and intellectual aspects of wellness. Emotionally, my assessment reveals that I have failed to invest much of my time in self-care and the development of inner resources, making me vulnerable to emotional imbalance, especially when I encounter obstacles in life. For instance, my lack of building internal resilience has made me vulnerable to mental torture during difficult situations. Besides, I must admit that I find it hard to maintain an appositive outlook once I encounter a social storm that makes me emotionally weak (College & Career Ready Labs, 2017). On the occupational aspect, I lag in offering myself services that positively impact the lives of others to improve my satisfaction by feeling appreciation for the value of my contribution. I rarely participate in volunteer programs that are instrumental in offering valuable insight into the ideal ways of living a fulfilled life by helping vulnerable people in society. I believe if I improve on these two wellness aspects, I will make important strides toward living a holistic life.

The self-assessment revealed that my strong areas are the environmental and intellectual wellness aspects. I scored highly in the two aspects as I invested sufficient time reading and exploring new insights on different topics, expanding my scope of knowledge. I also actively participate in cultural and community activities that offer valuable insight into the ideal ways of coexisting with other people peacefully. Building my intellectual acumen through active participation in communal programs and reading leaves me a better and more informed person, ready to power through different situations in life (Eliopoulos, 2010). Besides, I invest sufficient time to create an ideal environment that supports my emotional and physical needs, thus helping me be contented in life.

The key support systems I have had is the strong foundation of a reading and learning culture that exposes me to several life’s aspects and having a strong social circle that is supportive every moment. On the other hand, the barriers to a holistic life are the lack of willingness to create interest in volunteering activities and the lack of adequate mentors who should be guiding me on each of the eight aspects of wellness (Eliopoulos, 2010). The ideal way of striking a balance in all the eight aspects of wellness is through training and getting mentors who will be instrumental in guiding me to value each of the dimensions of wellness, thus setting a solid foundation for a holistic life.
