Article Summary

Garriga and Pennoni (2020) conducted a study to determine the impacts of divorce, separation, and temporary separation on children at different levels of their development. Additionally, this study looked into how divorce and separation affected children’s cognitive and emotional health. The researcher used the right imputation method and employed the augmented inverse propensity treatment to infer the casualty. The study showed that a temporary separation between parents is a disruption and affects children negatively. The areas affected are their emotional well-being and cognitive development, thus leading to emotional and mental challenges.

Most importantly, this study also showed that divorce and temporary separation affect children’s learning. Other negative outcomes of these different forms of separation were hyperactivity and unwanted conduct. Apart from these effects, the study did not examine any other impacts that divorce, separation, and temporary separation can have on the child.

On the other hand, research by Johnsen, Litland, and Hallström suggests that children end up having two homes, one in divorce and one in separation. The children are sometimes with the mother and other times with the father; therefore, this study by Johnsen, Litland, and Hallström (2018) looks deeper into how this kind of lifestyle where the child has two homes because of the parents’ separation affects the child. By understanding how these children live, the researchers got an insight into how they are affected. The study employed a qualitative research design using the hermeneutic phenomenological method. The participants were children aged between 10 and 13 years living in two different homes of each parent. These participants were interviewed, and the data was collected for analysis using four important life-world existential dimensions. This study showed that the children had a challenging experience because living in two homes was like living in two different worlds. The study also found that the children are emotionally challenged as they struggle with feelings of loss and detachment from their parents. Therefore, like all the other studies, this research supported the fact that divorce and separation have a negative impact on the lives and emotions of children.

Article Analysis

This first article examined the impact that divorce and separation can have on the well-being of children. Unlike the other research reviewed on this topic, Garriga and Pennoni’s (2020)  study focused not only on divorce and permanent separation but also on the effects of temporary separation on the well-being of the children who are victims of these separations. The other unique thing about this study is that it looks at the impact of divorce and separation on children at different phases of their development and is based on the quality of the parent relationship. Therefore, this study offers more knowledge on this study topic than the other studies. Another thing about this research is that it employed an experimental approach known to give more valid results that can be generalized. The only challenge with the paper is that it focused more on children in the UK, yet cultural and regional factors can influence the nature of separation and divorce. Thus, it would be challenging to consider that the experience of these children is similar to children in Asian or African societies.

Consistently, the research by Johnsen, Litland, and Hallström is valuable since it brings a different idea to this topic. Johnsen, Litland, and Hallström (2018) have examined the impact of divorce on children, especially when they live in two other homes. This is a very insightful approach to the study because, in many cases, researchers have not considered that living in different homes can also impact the child. The researchers have also used the qualitative research method, meaning that the information collected has more information to offer and can even express the participants’ feelings about the subject. As such, this study is helpful for the research. The only shortcoming of this research is that it relies only on the qualitative method. Using both qualitative and quantitative research methods gives the numerical statistics and the participant’s feelings about the topic, thus more information.
